So it was around 3pm when I heard a grinding squealing noise coming from somewhere..
Pulled over thinking I may Have caught a wire or something under the car... nothing... check the wheels, brake pads, rotors etc and see a deep cut in the front left rotor.
Luckily I was near my dealer service centre so stopped by to see it being paranoid as you would with a new car.
Turns out the corner (1/5th) of it cracked somehow.. service said it may have been the pad had bubbles within it or a small crack on that corner and caused it to shatter under heat and application.. so they replaced it under warranty.. but still that shouldn't be happening on any new brake pad..

a rock caught between pad and rotor maybe?

I thought of that.. but the pad shattered and it's so close to the rotor it's hard for a rock to get between isn't it? Anything's possible tho.. service centre reckons premature bubble or crack so dunno
Oh and you can run your nail through the cut

How can a rock get caught? Properly bedded pads should have no gap.
Why so many things going wrong?? I realy don't understand. I understand budget sports car, but brakes suspension and drive train should not fail from factory..

Toyota cut too many corners ... did your dealers replace your rotors too tibsy?

Since the rotor was cut by a defective brake pad - logic follows that the rotor should be replaced under warranty too - might as well.

I remember when I was younger my dad telling me, "Never buy the first model year of any car - that's just asking for trouble." This was years ago, and I'd have thought we'd be past that here in 2012, but maybe there's still something to it?

Ur dad waz right mate and will always be right - eg, iPhones, my Honda Accord Euro - all had problems in their first gens!

Thousands of these cars on the streets world wide, in the first production year....some things slide through at production.

The suppliers for the different pieces inspect them before they go on the cars at the line, and your depending on those people to not have a bad day.

When I worked at the VW plant where the Passat is made, there were issues as well, from the supplier park guys that were putting things together and missing stuff.

Nope because... oh none in stock.. but I have it all on paper so they can't stuff me around and say it's normal wear Nd tear later on.
And about that never buy a first release of a car.. so true. 1St innovation of turbo supercharged 1.4l engine from vw.. maaany issues, 2nd gen was better apparently.
My lady friend was like you always rush into first release of cars and they go all weird and have bugs.. only ever had one other car tho.
But who knows 5+ years or however many in the making you'd expect 100% perfection

seriously, this is just a regular unlucky problem, the brakes are not unique to the 86 so it has nothing to do with new car teething issues.

Sure it *shouldn't* happen, but it is a mass produced vehicle. SHIT WILL FAIL FROM TIME TO TIME. People just need to relax. That is why you have warranty.
@tibsy92 - to expect 100% perfection is ludacris... What a stupid thing to say.
How can you expect a mass produced, 30k car to be 100% perfect?? No car is, or will ever be, 100% perfect....

arent the calipers unique to this car? as in they arent ripped straight from a subaru? i thought that was the case

Actually, right in the centre; on alot of the brake pads, they come slotted to disperse heat... I believe rocks can get stuck in there.
I haven't had a chance to take the pads out and look at it, but maybe we have these slotted brake pads?

Happened to my AE86... Noticed one of my rotors had a groove all around, and soon enough, found out there was a rock stuck in the slot.
