tC vs the World *videos soon*

Another successful track day at Nashville Super Speedway. Brian (Jester) and myself were laying down the rubber and taking names with our 3xxwhp tC's against Porsche Cayman S, Porsche 911 turbos, open wheeled race cars...etc. We have some new track stories to share and more importantly....VIDEOS!!!!! I will work on getting mine compiled and I will link my boy's when he gets his up.

Ones I enjoyed chasing down were a Lancer Evo VI (very nice, looked like it came out of GT5). And the Porsche Cayman S with about an additional $20k worth of mods in it.

I looked up the specs for the Cayman S and they are:

320 hp @ 7,200 rpm
0-60 mph: 4.9 s
Top Track Speed: 172 mph
Consumption (Highway): 26 mpg (Manual)
MSRP $ 62,100.00

Like I said, it had $20k worth of mods already done to it when he bought it off another guy. He mentioned it was chipped (so more power than stock), brake package upgrade, adjustable suspension upgrade, sway bar upgrade, intake filter also.

We were evenly matched on the straights and I was stuck to his bumper in the corners and out cornering him. Got the pass going onto the front straight and then pulled away from him through the corners (Brian was corner working at the time and I only hope he got external video of this little battle, cause I did not record this one).

They also had an AutoX start/stop competition. We were to line on Pit lane and start from a dig and when we passed the start/finish line on the actual track, they would stop time.

They placed me in what they called Group 4 (not a race car but a modified one). Also in Group 4 was a Mustang with a non-stock V8, slicks, Lexan Glass on all windows/windshield, Roll Cage, gutted, race seat, removable steering wheel, non-factory dash AND it was trailered into the event! THAT was in my freaking group!!! Really? That's a damn race car. Anyhow, I had a passenger with me and this Mustang from a dig off the grid, beat my time by 2secs. I did a 1:22xx and he did a 1:20xx. So, he won Group 4 and I was runner up, with my passenger equipped Street car...

Anyhow, videos to come of some good action and you will get to see the Open Wheeled car that was 1275lbs and 15xxlbs with driver in it! Had a Motorcycle 4banger, no bushings what so ever so it was on rails, Hoosier slicks. Would catch me in the corners, but only had 115hp to muster down the straights. So, when I give him the point-by, he immediately points me back by because we were entering the front straight and I was pedaling the throttle behind him.

The thread title is fitting because it's awesome to go to the track and have guys in $60-160k dollar cars coming over to US in the Scions to figure out how WE are that fast.

I didn't get to run with the 911 Turbos, my boy did in his tC. He didn't take them out, as they were faster. What happened was, after the session, the 911 guys came over to him and looked bewildered and said, and I quote...."Man why can't we get away from you in the corners"...:) One was pushing 600hp and the other 700hp.

When dudes with 600-700hp and $160k dollar cars come over to you in your $20k dollar Scion and ask you about your setup....you know you are doing something right. :)

I'm about 2-3sec faster than my boy's tC. He has no aero on his except a factory wing. He's running a GT3076R turbo as well, on the PTuning Spec SS turbo setup.

Good stuff, man. I'm definitely gonna have to come out to one of these NSS track days soon.

It is cool you are having fun with the tC. But throw enough money at a Geo Metro and you can make it run with more expensive cars. But if I could afford a Cayman I would have no problems picking that over a heavily modded econo car.

Noticed the PTuning graphics on the car. They're an awesome shop.

And I would have no problem whooping your Cayman's ass around the track too. Haters and ignorant comments from inexperienced people only make me go faster.

Yeah and it's a darned shame.

In for the videos.

Forgot to mention, when I chased down the Cayman S and got the pass on him, I had my boy Lorne riding shot gun with me. He's about 6'5 and 200+lbs.

I would love to spend a weekend up there in Lebanon with my Talon. I haven't had it on a road coarse in years.

Do you know what the FWD, RWD, AWD lap records are for NSS? If I remember correctly the FWD record was held by a tC which was faster than the RWD record?

chulooz 09-12-2011 09:48 PM

Track experience > Car performance? :iono:

Props to pushing the hell out of that car though.

I know what the records are for AWD and FWD.

AWD record and the Overall Track record is held by the AMS Evo X with a 1:01xx lap time.

The FWD record is held by Chris Rado's Unlimited class Scion tC with a 1:03xx lap time.

Rado currently holds somewhere around 20 lap records for FWD around the US. He broke the Overall track record at last months Global Time Attack event at NJ Motorsports park. The Overall track record was reset again by the GST Imprezza and Rado a little over a second slower than the NEW overall track record.

That statement is 100% true within reason. The saying goes...."A fast driver in a slower car > a slower driver in a faster car".

In this situation, his car wasn't faster and neither was he a faster driver than I. The Cayman S was even with me on the straights (with my passenger in the car). But I out drove him in the corners, which are rather tight and you have to take the right line and be smooth in order to be quick through them. When I went to pass him, I had to muster it through the sweeper and get my cornering speed up to be able to take him on the straight, otherwise it would have just been a stale-mate on the next straight. I stayed on him though and once I got the pass, I out cornered him in the tights and made the gap.

He came over after that session and we chatted for a while. We turned some Porsche guys into Scion fans that day...:) Not fans as in they would go buy a tC, but that they appreciated what we were able to get out of our rides.

One of the guys who was Tech'ing the cars, was riding in the Lancer Evo VI. After I passed them in the Lancer, he came over later in the pits to ask me how much power I was making and was amazed about it being stock motor. And he stated after that...."So there is no secrets here...you just drive the hell out this thing".....

That's what it's all about....The nut you should never forget to tighten, is the one behind the wheel.

Next season
-built motor
-another 100whp
-another 40-100lbs lighter
-wider and flatter under lateral G-forces

On an open lap my times are around 1:14sec N/A. Currently I'm around the 1:11sec range and next year (even though it will be closed), I should be able to theoretically run a 1:08 lap time. Will never know since it's going to close :(.

Next track to tackle then would be Barber in Alabama. It's probably the closest track to us now.

Congrats on the wins! Anything official yet besides autoX?

Also, is everyone in your class running with aero and slicks?
