Trunk won't pop open

The trunk of my FR-S no longer opens electronically which means I have to use the key to open it manually from the back. It's quite a hassle since I would have to turn off my car to open the trunk if I was dropping someone off and they had stuff in my trunk. It doesn't open from the key or from the button on the driver's side. I'm assuming this is an electrical malfunction. Has this happened to anyone else before? I'm probably going to bring it into the dealership sometime soon to get it checked out.

Starscream15 09-16-2012 11:49 PM

Hit the little override button in the left side of the trunk area. It disables the front button and the Remote Trunk button as well.

EDIT: At least, there is one in the BRZ... I don't know for sure about the FR-S.

Did you hit the trunk deactivation button on the driver's side interior of the trunk by accident? It's used so that when you valet the car no one can open the trunk without the mechanical key.

Thanks for the help, I'll check it out after class. Didn't know this button existed.

Sorry. . have to do it. RTFM!! =P

Seriously though, there is some good information in the owner's manual, just read through it when you get a chance.

The trunk remote cancel toggle button is at the perfect height for a sixpack of beer in bottles to fall on its side and a bottle on the top to slide out and tap the button.

The key slot is non-obvious, tucked up horizontally on the underside of the little ledge above the license plate. It's even more non-obvious when you've got a brand new FR-S and beer in the trunk and you can't get the trunk open.

I didn't either until I had some groceries bump it. After unlocking it with my key and moving the groceries I saw the button. Such an odd location to put it imo.

This button exists on the FR-S; check the driver's side of your trunk and you should see a little button on the wall of the trunk as shown in the picture above.
I found it when I was putting some things in the trunk and noticed the button. Boggled the hell out of me why you'd want to cancel the remote feature until someone explained it for me.

Happened to me. I didn't realize there was a key hole on the trunk lid until after I popped the trunk open by folding down the rear seats and crawling/reaching for the emergency trunk release.

abutterman 03-21-2013 10:45 AM

i just thought of something... what happens with the brz limited that doesn't have a key? If you hit that button by accident, how would you get the trunk open?

dabocx 03-21-2013 10:48 AM

Had the same thing happen to me till i noticed the small button, derp herp i was going to take it to the dealer over the weekend.

Ive never had a car with a button like that so i guess it was unexpected.

I think you can lower the rear seats from the back seat, then you struggle and fight your way through whatever you have in the trunk :P

abutterman 03-21-2013 10:53 AM

Nvm im an idiot. Theres a tiny button on the side of the key fob that releases a little key! Kinda cool lol

Unless you've discovered something I haven't stumbled across yet, I don't believe you can open the seats from the front unless they are not latched. The releases are in the trunk.

yea that's what i was thinking that got me scared. You have to pull those straps from in the trunk to release the latch. once i discovered the hidden key in the keyfob, it was a nice sigh of relief.

Ive pulled the strap through to the other side and seems to work when I pull on straps seats come down. No need to go into truck to lower seats.

Thanks, hadn't thought of trying that.

By the way, as an aside, I think both the design of this and the fact that the valetlock is in the trunk hints there is some truth in the "86 was designed to be convertible from the outset".

kioton32 04-05-2013 06:30 PM

It also locks the back seats in place so you can't get in that way either... Very useful when you are planning on valeting and your girl wants to leave her purse in the trunk

kvnchu 04-06-2013 04:46 AM

what i dont understand is how that would stop a valet from getting in your trunk. In my old lexus, the button was in the glove compartment so you could lock it with the metal key out of the electronic key fob.

A valet could just unlock the trunk with the key you give him, what difference does it make?

kioton32 04-06-2013 12:58 PM

The valet key is shaped a little different at the tip and doesn't have the trunk tumbler bump on it...

My remote trunk won`t remote release, have to manually press trunk button inside. I tried to see if inside trunk button had any affect, same problem. Guess I have to take it to dealership. Anybody else experience the same problem?

Are you holding the button down or just tapping it? It needs to be held down for a second or so.

Sorry I was just about, to edit it once I saw that had already been tried. I would go to the dealership just make sure you bring both keys on my last car they reset it with a different code and than my spare wouldn't work.

speedy racer 04-08-2013 02:51 PM

Thanks Foobar, thats the problem, I open it before guess I am always in a hurry didnt hold remote button llong enough.

boead 04-08-2013 02:53 PM

There is also a place for your key on the bottom edge of the trunk I believe.

jschendel 04-08-2013 09:02 PM

yep, my problem was something sliding in the trunk and hitting the button inside, thought I was crazy but could have sworn I did not see a keyhole anywhere on the trunk. They hid it very well...

trdsolara 05-09-2015 01:32 AM

I was like wtf. I was thinking it was like my is250 where there is a button in the glove box but when I went to go check there wasn't. Left me like 😵. Then I found this. 😂

can you please explain how to do this?

TaylorFR-S 01-02-2021 04:16 PM

This worked!

Thanks to all for posting!! One button push saved me a visit to the dealer.

Button definitely exists and works in a 2013 Scion FR-S.

If the trunk and the door don't work or work intermittently, it is the fob battery (consult manual for how to change). If trunk and dash button do not work, it is this button.

I was moving and must have accidentally hit the button. I had never used it so I forgot about it.
