"Yu Muroga was doing his job making deliveries when the 11 March 2011 earthquake hit in Japan. Unaware, like many people in the area, of how far inland the Tsunami would travel, he continued to drive and do his job. The HD camera mounted on his dashboard captured not only the earthquake, but also the moment he and several other drivers were suddenly engulfed in the Tsunami. He escaped from the vehicle seconds before it was crushed by other debris and sunk underwater. His car and the camera have only recently been recovered by the police. The camera was heavily damaged but a video expert was able to retrieve this footage."

That is incredible not just how quickly it overwhelmed the area but how much power there was behind that water. :(

If only we could harness that power and stick it in the FR-S... too soon?

I was wondering, what would be the best survival strategy? Should you ride it out in the car or try to leave the car as soon as you can?

My first instinct is to get out of the car and get to higher ground or a sturdy building. Unless your car is usable as a whitewater boat or as a submarine :|, abandon it. Those cars in the video were too front heavy to work as stable boats in the first case and the tsunami quickly overwhelmed the streets.

If I was in a car with a sealed bottom end, waterproofed, and balanced I could see maybe sticking it out IF you were able to stay out of the current. But that tsunami was a massive crushing force, anyone caught in it would not have made it out :(.

If you know the area, you wanna get out of the car asap and evacuate to safer ground. Side note, you wanna turn off the car you to leave the car too

Escape asap and get to higher ground. Of course any strategy is a roll of the dice in a disaster like that, but you're really making a big gamble sticking in your car. Eventually some debris will hit it (like in this video) and basically crush it. I'm surprised it lasted that long. The debris could be anything; a tree, light pole, another car, etc. thats traveling at 30+ mph and just side impacts you, or smashes your windows.

Or the current could carry your car and smash it into a building, or it could hit something that's hidden underneath the water.

That video is just crazy though...couldn't imagine being in that.

Lot of pallets floating around in that video...must've been near a distribution/shipping industrial area.

I think that video camera is mounted on the car directly and it has a little battery that can record video for like 30 min to 1 hour even if the power from the car is lost. I have one device just like that as it is very popular in Asia, for accident evidence or blaming to record the action at the time of impact.

From the last of the video it seems the car is trapped within a container and then the sea water eventually run over it, and thus shut off the power. The memory car may still be intact so that is the reason why the video can be recovered.

And I agree, in this situation, leave the car and run for higher ground is the best way. Car is not a good floating device.
