BMW 2014 F80 M3 Engine (Turbo Inline 6) Physically Exposed!

Quote:

Back in May we first confirmed that the F80 M3 and F82 M4 would be powered by an inline 6 cylinder turbo engine and indeed we've just received these first photos of the next gen M3/M4 engine, with visual proof of the inline cylinder setup.

The F80 M3 / F82 M4 will have some good cooling of the the heated air pumping from its turbos, via components such as the air-to-water/liquid intercooler unit (to the right of the engine cover) feeding the cylinders with cooled air. If this setup is anything like in the M5/M6 S63Tu engine, the air is cooled by this unit right before it reaches the cylinders. There appears to be twin intake boxes and the oil cooler bracket looks to be the same as on the N54 and N55 engines.

The photos do not confirm the exact number of turbos, but the two charge pipes feeding the intercooler is a sign that it probably has at least two turbochargers. Whether a third electric turbo (rumored) lies somewhere out of sight remains to be seen.

Expect this engine to output in the ballpark of 450 horsepowers. It's been rumored to be an extensively reworked and reinforced N55 6-cylinder engine with a strengthened aluminium block with a heavily modified cylinder head. The Induction technology is said to be completely new as will be the latest bi-vanos variable valve timing. This engine may also be a reworked/enhanced version of the successor engine to the N55 (which has not yet been introduced).

The F80 M3 will no doubt be the stiffest M3 yet, and the brawny strut tower brace surely contributes to just how tightly the entire car will handle and feel.

How will this engine sound? We've just posted the latest M3 prototype videos from the Nurburgring, so have a listen @ http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=743864

Talk about a cramped engine bay...my fingers won't even fit in there...

Maybe Lexus will follow suit and make the next IS-F V6/I6 turbo.

My next M3 for sure...

What engine? All i see is plastic.

All of that, and it's still a fat pig. Why oh why did the M3 become as big as the older M5. I miss the size of the E46 M3, the E9x just got too big. Personal opinion, obviously, but I'd like to see the M3 go back to being a small, powerful luxury sports coupe.

Gone are the days of dead simple engines devoid of any stupid plastic covers...

Indeed! The E30 M3 remains to be one of my most favorite cars: small, light, and nimble.

Bracing is pretty serious.

It's amazing to me how BMW cars don't overheat..? Is it cuz there's no space for air? Seriously, I don't even bother doing oil change or even light bulb replacement...

Actually E36/E46/E39, etc. all had issues with killing radiator bits and pieces, among other things, and most of these cars nuke their oil from track use, hence why BMW uses 10w-60 oil.

Thanks, didn't know that. Do love their car design... but sure in hell don't like their engine bay

I like this return to straight sixes.

Me too but then they slapped the true enthusiasts in the face by saying its turbocharged. BMW did such a good job with the E60 engine that they should have just used that engine in every future M5 but of course fuel laws and such don't approve of this.

Even the E9X V8 with an 8400 rpm redline was more of an M car than the current M5.

We fell in love with M cars because they were NA, high revving, manual transmission (mostly) tracks cars for the street. I don't know what's going on at BMW these days...."JEREMY CLARKSON SAYS IT NEEDS MORE POWER! HANS! GET THE TURBOS!"
