self-starter

I'm interested in getting an self-starter installed for the upcoming winter. Has anybody had this done or plan on doing it and recommend any products?

I'm pretty sure this would void the warranty though right?

Remote start? There are many options these days.

Won't void your warranty. DroneMobile allows you to use an app on your Android/iPhone to remotestart, geolocate, rolldown windows, etc.

Hmmm almost $600 AND a monthly fee.... pass.

There isn't any remote start service that will work with your smartphone/browser from anywhere in the world without a monthly fee. If you're interested in a ranged remote start (typically around 800 feet best conditions), without any of the security/tracking/convenience features then you can get something for as low as $50.

The folks that provide the DroneMobile service will be happy to sell you just the remote start component of their system for around that much, Viper and others have similar offerings.

I can live with just the remote start from my keychain. I can pass on the app lol. That just means I need to whip out my phone innput my passcode then get to the app everytime.

I was just asking 'cause the FRS/BRZ are such new cars and concepts that if there would be any challenge to installing them.

how does the remote starter work with the BRZ Ltd prox key? I'd like to get a remote start as well, however when I walk to the car now, I don't have to unlock it, i just reach for the handle and it unlocks.

Is it possible to integrate the remote starter/alarm so that the alarm disarms as i reach for the door handle (simultaneous with the doors unlocking)?

It'll integrate right into the existing system. I don't have a remote start on my BRZ, but my wife's car has it - you do the remote start, the car remains locked but the engine starts. You walk up to it, key in proximity, touch the handle and the door unlocks. Now you can drive away. If you don't have the key in proximity, you can't get in. If you break the glass and try to drive off without the key, the system shuts down. I believe this is all stock functionality that keyless entry/start cars have.

I talked to a toyota services rep manager today and he said even though they perform remote start installations, toyota doesn't recommend it because it has to bypass the clutch which could damage the tranny. I just did a quick google and was wondering if anybody else is aware of this and if there's any real truth behind it?

We had decent convo and he recommended that I still do it and that there shouldn't be any issues, but at another service center instead (another story). I would have felt fishy if he said he or his guys will do it but he is recommending another shop so he won't commission or profits anyways.... right?

It will be fine. You don't leave the car in gear with remote starters on manual trannys

Foobar 09-13-2012 10:20 PM

Remote starters won't engage if you park the car in gear. Your Toyota rep is misinformed.

Woha remote start will never broke anything if install propely. What you need is a bypass to bypass the chip on the key, and a remote start module. The only brand that I know to have a bypass module available is iDatalink ( a Quebec brand :P )

How much should I Expect to be charged to have a remote start installed. I'm guessing this is a generic or simple device 'cause I'm asking Toyota to give me quote. Just looking to see what's the ballpark for this kinda job. Thanks.
