Exhaust parts explanation

I have seen a lot of confusion between midpipes, downpipes, etc hopefully this pic from Perrin will help out. The front pipe is also called a down pipe or in my case a test pipe from Motiv.

The midpipe and muffler is what is replaced with a catback system right?

An axleback is just a muffler in all cases I assume.

Therefore this combo: Greddy EVO3 catback + Nameless downpipe(aka front pipe) w/high flow cat and overpipe...Should replace everything except the headers. Cool, looks like all I have to do now is look for headers.

Nice post.

Yes and yes.

And the SRT full exhaust replaces everything except the header.

We need to start making stickies out of info like this.

Exhaust FAQ:

1) Q. What does the stock exhaust look like? What are the parts to it?
A. Diagram

2) Q. Is the stock header equal length or unequal length?
A. It is technically unequal length. Nameless Performance measured the runners and found a 30% difference in length.

More info:
The front pipe (down pipe) has a cat in it but it can be replaced without causing a check engine light, there are no sensors in this section. This section has potential for good hp gains by replacing with a test pipe (motiv) or high flow cat/downpipe (motiv, nameless, srt, etc)

The midpipe contains a resonator, if you are shopping for a catback and want to keep it quiet i would suggest one that also has a resonator or just getting an axleback. I personally will most likely be getting an axleback because i don't think there are much gains to be had in that section.

Ya know I ordered the catless midpipe but am rethinking it as many of the headers and turbo kits are catless; to prevent it from smelling 100% racecar, I think keeping a cat on there makes sense till I'm further along the track only commitment route

I have a catless setup in the garage and its smelly, so maybe I will try both-selling either wint be an issue on this forum

I totally feel you.

I had catless exhaust system on my EVO X. It stinks!!!!

I would like atleast keep a 200 or 300 cell hight flow cat to elaminate the smell!

I want someone to make a front pipe that can keep the factory cat for all the smog nazis in CA.

GFL
The stock cat/front pipe would have to be ordered, the cat cut out of the pipe, and then re-welded into the new pipe.

If I lived in CA I would probably just go catback, and try to wait for a TRD supercharger.

Wait, what am I saying? If I lived in CA I would just move.

But then I would have to live somewhere where it's less awesome!
