Car and Driver: Porsche Cayman S vs. Scion FRS

First off, I have to apologize... I've searched and searched, and I cannot find a link to the article on their website. I will keep searching, and post when i find the article online

i'll just post the bottom line on the cars for now.

FRS:
+ finally, a miata coupe; 99% fun; priced within reach; rear seats and usable trunk
- engine needs more juice and a better voice, unmistakably the cheapest version of this car
= would finish second only in this strange comparo

Cayman S:
+ all the learnings of seven decades at Le Mans, what the 911 used to be, usable cargo space
-damnably expensive, variable damping an unnecessary frill, basic dash looks cheap
= more than 3 times the price of the FRS and worth it

it's in the current issue of Car and Driver, and definately an interesting and amusing comparo.

"in contrast, the FRS came to us as naked as a newborn, augmented by only a $95 trunk mat and $67 wheel locks. Coincidentally, the cheapest option available on a Camnay S is a $95: a leather keypouch to match the car's interior" thought that was funny

They also posted a 6.4s 0-60 for the FR-S.

Why do they always compare the Cayman S and not the base Cayman?

Scion FR-S
148 kW (200 hp) at 7,000 RPM
0-100 kph: 6.2 s
Top Track Speed: 225 kph

Weight: 2,758 lbs
lbs/hp: 13.79

$27,500

Cayman
195 kW (265 hp) at 7,200 rpm
0-100 kph: 5.8 s
Top Track Speed: 265 kph

Weight: 2,954 lbs
lbs/hp: 11.15

$ 59,200

Cayman S
235 kW (320 hp) at 7,200 rpm
0-100 kph: 5.2 s
Top Track Speed: 277 kph

Weight: 2,976 lbs
lbs/hp: 9.3

$ 70,900

I'm not sure where you got your performance stats from but in this specific article the FR-S hits 60 (i realize you're quoting 62) in 6.4 and the Cayman S 4.5. And that's with the 6 speed manual. The PDK Cayman is more like 4.3 s. A base Cayman with 265 hp can hit 60 in the low 5s, not high 5s.

Also I am guessing the prices you list are Canadian dollars, not USD.

Not that I disagree they should be using a base Cayman for the comparison!

Got the specs off the porsche.ca website. I don't compare PDK since it's not comparable, just 6sp MT.

Motortrend hit 6.2 0-100. I used that.

You cannot compare manufacturer's listed times against times measured by a car magazine. They're not comparable in the least. Either compare 2 manufacturers posted times or compare 2 magazine times. You have to be consistent. And Scion lists the FRS at over 7 seconds I believe.

FRS/BRZ certainly feel quicker than 7 seconds 0 to 60!!

And I agree with others that the comparo should be FRS/BRZ vs regular Cayman

LOL, well certainly if you have to resort to using a published time for the FRS reason and logic would say you should do the same for the Porsche, no?
