First AutoX in my BRZ...lol tires

Had my BRZ out for the SD BMWCCA AutoX this weekend at Qualcomm. The car is bone stock except for some crash bolts up front. I must say, the car was wonderful out there. Very balanced, power felt good, brakes felt good. Grip was....well grip was awful on the Prius tires, as expected. I was drifting most of the 1.2 mile, relatively high-speed course, all day long. The car did pretty well despite the grip issues. An FRS came out that day too, so it was fun comparing our car's differences.

Here's my rear tires after 8 runs. I had another 3 runs after this pic was taken.

yeah, I'm stuck on this set for a bit. My wife gave me the "you aren't buying parts for this car immediately!"

That must be one abrasive site. I lucked out, my first two events were on slick surfaces, so I had shitty grip but very little tire wear. I've since gotten some star specs and the stock ones are for road use. I really didn't want to have to buy autocross tires AND new street tires.

yeah, the lot is very abrasive and getting pretty worn in areas. The speeds are high and the courses are large though.

Know what your tire pressure was for the runs? I've did two events on the stock tires and luckily didn't have that much wear. Both were slower courses though, with tighter more technical turns.

I've done probably a total of 40 runs with the stock tires and they don't look anywhere as bad as that

Well, I was literally drifting almost the entire time. I wasn't really shooting for the fastest time. Still beat the FR-S by 6 seconds though. :happyanim:

Did you let them get very hot by not spraying between runs? That would go a long way to make them last longer and not chunk.

Oh should I do that?

ABQautoxer 09-10-2012 04:29 PM

Yeah depending on tire temps, too hot can make the damage a lot worse than it needs to be. Go make friends with the people that race in STU/STX/STR/STC in your area and ask for help judging when to spray water on the tires between runs to keep them in the operating temps and prevent this type of premature damage. Most people use a $10-25 garden sprayer from Lowes/Home Depot filled with just regular water.

I second this. I had to spray my tires at two events this summer. If you are serious, its worth getting an infared temperature gun or pyrometer as well.

Those tires look chewed up for sure!!!
I ran 2 auto-x with 12 laps each and they barely showed much wear on the outer shoulder and even less on the insides.
