Eh? I read in a Japanese Magazine that Rotary is shut down until the economy heals. :l

Its been scheduled for years. It's the end of the rx8s life cycle.
|
It's only been out for 10 years....
The RX9 is looking good! 16x engine should be a great one with all the laser beams lol! |

This is old news buddeh. The RX-8 failed Euro emissions so they had to stop selling the next MY versions. The US demise announcement was later but it was much earlier this year. And the RX-8 has only been selling for 8 years. The standard production life cycle for Mazda and Subaru BTW. Welcome to low volume manufacture. Think about it, the RX-8 hasn't changed physically in it's power output or engine size. It's still basically the same engine they started selling in 2003(MY04), they did change the gearbox and differential gearing in 09. But it is time for an update. Matsuda is working on a replacement to be release in the next couple of years. It would have to be radically different to change my opinion of Matsuda Rotaries or the Wankel Rotary in general. I don't think they make too little power compared to most performance 4's, but they did put it in a bigger compact, almost a sedan, than they should have. |
My bad! :bonk:
|
Wow, it just hit me. This is the first time, since the economy took a shit on itself, that I've been negatively affected by it... and it's just about a car. lol
:bonk: I really hope they don't kill off the Rotary engine. Although Felix Wankel may smite me for saying this, but I think they should look to share Rotary tech with one of the larger Japanese auto manufacturers. Make it more mainstream, the design has so much potential but it's being hindered by GD Mazda's small scale R&D. |
^ Isn't part of the problem that they can't do all the fancy valve-timing stuff for emissions, because their 'camshafts' are the ports that are carved and unmoveable in the housings?
