Record Sale of Sport Car - 1031 of 86 sold up to end of August

Hyundai has sold 2597 of its curvy three-door Velosters this year to the end of August. Toyota has added 1031 of the popular but supply-constrained Toyota 86 sports coupes to a segment mix that should comfortably top 20,000 cars for the first time ever in 2012.

Toyota Australia spokesman Mike Breen says the company has been “overwhelmed” by the response to the 86, its first proper sports model since the demise of the Celica and MR2 in 2006.

“We haven’t had such a response since the MR2 and Supra days,” he says. “We had an expectation that 86 would create a buzz, but it’s gone beyond what we expected.”

Breen says global supply constraints mean Toyota has been unable to meet demand for the 86, with waiting times stretching from three to 18 months, the latter applicable to the sought-after GTS model fitted with the manual gearbox favoured by performance-minded drivers.

Affordable pricing, kicking off from $29,990 (plus on-road and dealer costs) for the 86 GT model, has been a key to the model’s strong popularity but the more expensive GTS ($35,490) has so far claimed a 60-40 share of sales.

Subaru has only sold 116 BRZs since the model went on sale in mid-July in a world- first internet-only car sales strategy. It’s expected the company won’t offer any more BRZs for sale until 2013.

I think Toyota sold 10x too many cars, they keep taking orders even though they know they can't meet - figures only as they can't deliver anyway as the support threads and WA delays and across Australia will attest.

orders are not sales and therefore not included in these figures.

if Australia is only allocated 1500 cars this year and they have already delivered 1031, then there are only 469 left until 31 Dec and no wonder the delivery time keeps getting delayed.

And it was stupid of them to do 25% to GT Auto 25% to GT Manual 25% to GTS Auto and 25% to GTS Manual.
They shouldve known the manuals alone would be far more popular.

but that's the benefit of hindsight. they had nothing to base on (last sports car was soooo long ago) so splitting them evenly is a safer bet. i'd think they would change the split for 2013 onwards.

+ Australia is a nation of fatties, so many lazy people who dont want to shift.

Last i checked the auto/manual ratio here was 80/20 so 50/50 would have made sense in a business case.

Battling Sydney peak hour traffic everyday sucks balls. That's why auto was my choice (and a few others on this board as well).

Each to their own though, but I for one have no regrets getting an auto :D

From what I understand they had 400 preorders before the official release, so surely they would have known then what the most popular model was!
Also in my opinion all orders should be and should have been in order of when you signed your contract. That would be the fairest way.

but yes i agree the current system is lousy.... subaru's BRZ first in first serve model is better.

This can't possibly make sense. You can't count the ratio across family/eco/small hatches/vans/utes as well as sports cars, it would be totally distorted. Sports cars are catered for a certain demographic who would be somewhat more inclined to buy a manual than an auto (or at least more so % wise than regular cars). Splitting them evenly was a stupid decision and just extremely poor market research or lack thereof on Toyota's behalf. Add to that the GT Auto has no LSD so there would be less of an incentive to purchase that spec compared to their other models.
