BlaineWasHere's DD/AutoX FR-S Build Thread

Hello FT86club,

My name is Blaine and below you will find the history behind my FR-S! I have a job which requires me to drive 400+ miles a week, and I autoX about 20+ weekends a year. I also live in a VERY densely populated area and I rent so I can only have ONE CAR!

I had been following the GT-86 since concept but was not sure I would even buy one. As more and more details of the car where released it became more and more inciting! Well as time when on it all come together that I was able to sell my (paid off so I had a big stack of cash for down payment) DD/AutoX prepped MKV GTI and days after get the call that my FR-S was in!!!

Picking it up at Peircy Toyota in Milpitas, CA (6MT, Whiteout!!!)

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...65907009_n.jpg

Shortly there after I added 245/40/17 Hankook R-S3s and 17x9 et42 Rota Grids... AND went to do some AutoX!

https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...21919495_n.jpg

Car was SOOOOO much more fun to drive with more grip! It did exacerbate the stock alignment deficiency. Lot's of push on turn in and some lift-off oversteer. However car was still VERY fast just like this.

Then I added KW-V3s. I can't wait to take the car to autoX now with the coils and MUCH better alignment! Please don't hate on my amature photo skills!

http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h3...ewashere/1.jpg

I don't think I'll do a ton more mods for now, I'd like to get a bunch of AutoX in and get some tuning done on the alignment/damping before I toss more stuff at it.

I'm never much for cosmetic mods on any of my cars, but I'm thinking about doing some white or black Toyota badges and BRZ side vents. Also considering a lip spoiler of some sort... We'll see...

Thanks for checking my car out!

black T badges would definitely match with those wheels..

Grimmspeed. It's not amazing, but better than holes in the bumper!

Ricepuddin 10-06-2012 01:23 PM

Very nice! Good choice in tires, I just put mine on yesterday and I am loving them.

I ran two sets on my MKV GTI before. I autoX most of the time on concrete and these tires are GREAT on that type of surface.

Amazing pics and great wheel setup. Deff gunna look into 17 x9 thanks

Your car has convinced me to get grids, how are they for autox? I would think a lighter wheel would be better for this car?

Also, do you ever take 680 to work in the morning? I see a lowered white FR-S with black wheels on my way to work almost every morning, wondering if that could be you.

I know they are not the lightest wheel, but they prob weigh around stock but can accommodate a MUCH lager tire. I think I am going to get something else for autoX once the tread wares out on the RS3s and use the grids for daily use.

That's not me on 680, I use just about every other freeway in the South Bay (17/880, 280, 101, 85, 87, and 237) daily. Those rolling shots are on 85 actaully.

Where do you autoX at?

Kilzod 12-20-2012 12:15 PM

Looks great! Keep up the good work!

Oh nice, I was thinking of the RPF1s for autox, but damn those grids look good. Too bad I can't afford the TE37s and have the best of both worlds!

I'll probably see you around sometime then, I take 680, 880, 237, and 101 on a daily basis.

I used to autox with the SF SCCA, in Oakland, Marina, and GGF. But I stopped going with my WRX recently and will be waiting until I get my BRZ to get back into it (should be another month til then).

Nice, I'm sure I'll see you at AutoX at some point this season then! Don't waste your time trying to run on the stock tires even if you keep everything else stock.

I've actaully never done an SCCA event even though I've done hundreds of club events both here and when I live in Michigan.

Damn, massive contrasting color - love it! Unfortunately not brave enough to do this kind of thing outside of Gran Turismo 5 :D

I'm not really either! They will just be for track/autoX and other random things. The black Grids will stay on for daily duty. I wanted obnoxious colored wheels, just not all the time!!!

Clipdat 04-01-2013 08:19 PM

Nice, best of both worlds!

lol, I know you said not to whinge about photo skills.. but this one above was the only one that sort of shows the concavity of the wheels..

I'm in the same boat as you, ordered black RPF1s (weigh less than stock) and will pick up the Grids (same weight as stock) for DD in the meantime. No crazy colours for me though.

BlaineWasHere 04-07-2013 10:29 PM

Wheel: RPF1 17x9 et45

I really wanted some obnoxious colored wheels, but didn't want it for my daily set. So I when I decided to get a dedicated AutoX set-up I decided it was time! Enjoy!

PMok 04-08-2013 03:57 PM

looking good!

haha ironic that you took a shot in front of the "SLOW" sign. You should have angled it a little so that sign was clearly visible. ;)

Nice wheels!

How is the change coming from Grids? I believe Rotas are heavier than Enkeis. Any change in acceleration/cornering/response?

I have yet to do an event with the new wheels but they do feel a ton lighter. Where I actually notice it the most is freeway acceleration when I don't take it out of 6th gear. Steering does also feel a lot lighter.

frslee 04-08-2013 04:42 PM

Just what I wanted to hear... My plan is getting Kosei or Enkei by next summer.
Got to use these stockers first.

whataboutbob 04-08-2013 11:51 PM

That color for the wheels is epic!
