Turbo kit campaign

We have a group of fabricators and tuners that are in the midst of development of a turbo kit for the FR-S. I cannot release too much exact information right now, but I can answer questions and get concerns to the developers.

What would you guys like to see? How much do you want to spend (realistically) ? Anything else you would like developed at the same time? Who would still daily drive theirs after being turboed? Would you still worry about mpg?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. And we will always remember who helped in the beginning.

If this is legit, I always look at AVO as an example.
they have a turbo kit for the Subaru Impreza for $3,200 which to me sets the bar for price. their quality and reliability is outstanding so lets start there.

I'd say low PSI kits for those who want to keep all other components stock. I would love to see a study on a variety of turbos with Dyno results to study what works better for this engine.

We are real! Very adamant about building the best for the FR-S/BRZ. We hope to be unveiling our prototype at SEMA this year. Having a finished product for purchase by first quarter of 2013.
We are also developing a custom turbo for this application. Something that will keep the fun of the car and add the "extra" we all seem to want.

This is exciting! I would suggest UEL headers too, they add the character this car has lost with it's exhaust sound.
a stealth set up is also welcome by peope who live in those states with dumb laws.

I personally wouldn't mind having a turbo you can show off to people which means something acccessible as ou open the hood. But I'm fine with anything.

I'm all about the cost honestly, I really hate the idea of paying 1/5 of the price of the car on just the kit without considering installation etc.

what do you guys have in mind???

subatoy 09-01-2012 01:05 AM

oh yeah that custom turbo idea sounds GREAT!

I can safely say that a lot of people would be very happy if you could retain NA drivability, meaning a steady power band without a kick on the face at 5k rpm!

This car SUCKS at low end stock. especially in the real world applications just driving around st. and stuff.
you can't even pass minivans with the damn thing!

How about a short shifter? Short throw shifter as well? As far as the turbo kit goes, I amoung others would like to spend less than $10xxx on less than 500rwhp... Personally i like the big surge of boost from a collosal turbo setup. Just something that can be tammed by the respectable driver. Another thing to look at, would possibly be a custom intake manifold, something that can flow excellent with a rather large turbo and can handle the pressure. How about aftermarket cam gears? And mild cams? Just food for thought.... Thanks guys. BTW, whats the name of yall's shop and the location?

I agree with pretty much everything Subatoy said. Reliable, low boost(this car doesn't NEED a lot more power for a lot of us), stock internals, something I can show off but still looks factory-ish, and in my opinion UEL headers would be great.

Short shifter would be awesome too like usptwins said.

NO DULL ON THROTTLE RESPONSE ;)

TheChopShop 09-01-2012 02:59 AM

The Chop Shop is our name, we are located in Washington. But we are working with companies and facilities in California, Oregon, and Colorado.
Here is our list of requirements that we have put on this campaign
Keep stock internals, full factory warranty, variable power bandwidths, raise tq and hp as equally as possible while keeping reliability, better exhaust note, keep HVAC, radiator upgrade, and maybe an exhaust system.
We welcome all ideas and criticisms.
We have also been in discussion for an all FR-S weekend in Vegas. With some Las Vegas Motor Speedway track time. Anyone interested in this? Should I make a post about this as well?

No bumper cutting, this is a deal breaker for me. Stealth is good and have an option to keep at least of the cats in place. Remove the post o2 sensor cat.

Have air filter in a position where ambient temp air is fed into intake system, not preheated behind the radiator air.

Give a 3 year warranty on the turbo system itself

Use reflash tunes ie ECUTEK or other (yes other exists)

Keep stock emissions

Good throttle response

Include engine oil cooler

TheChopShop 09-01-2012 04:26 AM

Yes, I agree, no body modifications whatsoever. We want to keep it completely stock looking. As though everything was there from the factory.

Tradewind 09-01-2012 04:28 AM

I forgot price

Go for $4k in a box, fitting/shipping/tuning is extra
