I rather like the shifter they use on the Volvo; it's pretty cool-looking IMO.

I would honestly be happy with a proper leather boot and just a metal lockout ring; less plastic and more metal would help to make this car feel more upscale.

I rowed through the gears in a Gallardo Balboni earlier this year (not driving, just sitting) and ermahgerd did it feel so good! Just like Richard Hammond said on Top Gear: "it feels like shaking hands with an old friend." If they don't like to be shifted quickly though, that's a problem.

Correct. They look great but they really like slow shifts, you have to be precise with shifting motions, etc..

Since I'm a function>form guy, I would never want one. But they do look cool.

This. I like a shifter that I can just shove 2-3 with my palm instead of having to zig-zag through some gates. Granted, that's from years of drag racing T56 cars.

My Volvo S60 had that type of shifter... It was neat at first... Then I realized I was driving/owning a Volvo. I HATED that car. Horrible engineering outside of the engine/turbo. I could def. tell Ford had their hands in on making the car I owned.

I still think Spyker has the coolest shifter of any car:

Nothing beats the *ting* sound when shifting

That's why I have a metal slinky sitting around my shifter. My shifts sound like they're out of Fast and Furious... Even when I double clutch up shifting, you know, like in the movie! ;)

Well, yes, I wasn't saying Volvo was cool, just their shifter design ;)

To add one on afermark wouldnt work really, probably just get in the way. I will say the Audi R8's gated shifter is fantastic, really really impressive

Unless you have one of the odd shift patterns like some older exotics (Ferrari comes to mind) Where the shift pattern is

R 2 4
1 3 5

Then 2-3 shifts are fantastic! 1-2, not so much.

Haha.

Actually I'd have to say that Pagani makes the best shifter on the face of the earth:

Actually I would love to have a gated shifter, please somebody make one.

Oh they are very very slick looking. And the exotics, up until this generation (458/F12 Berlinetta and Aventador) have them. I just can't imagine making my car shift worse for aesthetics.

IMO it doesn't make them shift worse and it adds to the experience.

Do you honestly believe Ferrari would have continued with the gated shifter for so long just for aesthetics? The only reason the gated shifter is no longer offered, is because they no longer have a true manual (stick) shift in the range.

Did you have a regular S60 or an S60R?

Yes.

You're from Adelaide. Find someone with a VY/VZ Commodore or Monaro that has a GMM Ripshifter in it and see if they'll let you run up through the gears. Then try to match that in your F-Car.

Note how 2-3 is two movements. Up to neutral, center, then up to 3rd.

On the other hand...

Now without shift gates, 2-3 is just a shove. It's faster and more natural.
