How many of you actually drifted your 86/FRS?

I'm not talking about 2 inch powerslides or chicano u-turns.

Well?

i dont have anywhere close that i can try.... sure there is a couple turn arounds/dead ends in a industrial park which isnt dangerous late at night but there is always obstacles around that are dangerous to my cars health for someone who never really drifted.

I did last weekend here:

Tons of fun. This car is very easy to control in a 4 wheel slide.

Nothing awesome, but just some cones in a parking lot and keeping it in first and second. Just to feel how she holds in the corners.

I've done some drifting, the Prius tires definitely help it get sideways. Not to mention the retarded factory -1.5 camber in the rear.

It's alright but only if you're staying under 15mph. Just not enough power. And 15mph isn't real drifting.

Give me a couple weeks and I'll have you a REAL drift video with my recent power upgrade.

Tell me more about how rear negative camber helps drifting

D1cker 08-31-2012 01:17 PM

If anything the factory camber will make the car understeer.....

We've been known to get a little sideways...

I forgot to mention the front camber, which is set to ZERO. Proper drift setups always run more camber in the front than the rear. Toyobaru obviously gave the rear more negative camber from the factory so it could break traction easier.

If I ran a high speed drift setup it would probably end up being somewhere around -4F/-2.5R. But that's just a guess.

But then again, the FR-S wasn't supposed to have a drift setup from the factory.

You need to take a step back from your "expert" opinion on drifting. Your opinion of it is that drifting immense amounts of requires raw power, which it doesn't. I drifted the shit out of AE86. Stock bluetop with an intake and exhaust on an OPEN diff. It slid like a champ. That car had maybe 100hp to the wheels.

My FR-S slides just as well on 18x8s running Hankook Ventus tires which have substantially more grip than the prius tires, and more HP to the wheels You do NOT need "crazy HP" or a turbo, so stop preaching about your lack of ability without power. That's your preference, and your style. It's not a requirement to drift. Many others have no issues drifting in this car, long sustained drifts too, by finding the balance points, and keeping speed.

The AE86 is FAMOUS for drifting and is 250% driftable at stock. Hell with just coilovers and an LSD you can drift it even better, no extra power required. This car is the same way.

You missed the part where I was referring to higher speed drifting. Neither 86's can hold a higher speed drift and continue to spin the tires with stock power. I also never said it needed crazy horsepower or anything, more power does help though; that's a given. If you don't believe that then you are sadly mistaken. I also never mentioned I was an expert on the subject anywhere.

Seems like you have a lot of bottled up anger from other people posting about how they need mass amounts of raw power to drift. I didn't mention that anywhere in my posts, only that I believe that it needs more. Personally I'll be running upwards of 300whp which is WAY MORE than enough for drifting. But drifting isn't the only thing I do with the car.

Your average Toyobaru driver isn't an expert drifter and might need more power to learn how to drift. Nobody is an pro right off the bat it balancing speed, power, body roll, suspension, etc etc.

Can we please keep the drift purist conversation out of this casual thread? There doesn't need to be any hating going on in here.

On a side note: I applaud you for drifting a 100hp vehicle with an open differential. That takes skill.

No-one needs more power to drift. I'm not angry, I just don't like the way you post. You're the wrong person to hand out drifting advice. If anyone wants to learn to how to drift they should start on underpowered cars, and learn balance and control. Then you step up the power. That's how you get really good. Power hides the mistakes since you can mash the gas and suddenly be sliding.

lolwut? You came into this thread saying "You can't really drift in this car, you need MORE POWER." Now you're saying it's a casual thread? Your words:

Stop calling out what other people are doing as "not real." That is why I felt the need to respond to you.

Thanks, but I suck at it.
