Dirty throttle body

While pulling the stock inlet tube off after about 400 miles (for installation of the AVO Inlet Tube), saw this buildup already in the throttle body.

It's that black line running along there.

It was easy enough to remove, I just put some brake cleaner on a rag and wiped it off with a bit of elbow grease.

It does make me wonder how effective the standard Toyota air filter is, given that it has only been 400 miles, and it's not exactly pollution heavy here in Seattle. Checked the inside of the inlet filter, and it's not from blow by oil.

The PCV vents right in front of the TB, could it be oil from that?

:mad0259: Gotta get a catch can from Day 1.

I was thinking it would be that - Subaru's are just a touch notorious for blow-by - but there's not even a hint of oil on the bottom of the standard inlet nor the throttle body. Wiped it down just to check.

any logic in reloc'ing the pcv?

As someone who works with a lot of Subaru NA H4 with added FI - I can definitely agree with that

Should have checked when I installed my Airaid intake. I'll make sure to check the next time I have the tube off. :thanks:

Thanks for the heads up Paul! This is definitely worth knowing early so we can keep an eye on it and clean it going forward.

it's just a slight deposit; nothing to worry about on a stock or mildly modified vehicle. They all do that. The electronic throttle will compensate for it at idle.

Keep in mind that the factory uses a thick dye to mark where the throttle plate comes in contact with the TB during assembly for calibration purposes. From what it looks like in the pic, it is the factory dye you are looking at and it takes considerable more "elbow grease" to remove that dye than normal blow-by that causes TB contamination. Looking at the picture after cleaning I would say 99% sure you were removing the dye as there is still residue left after cleaning which definitely in not blow-by as blow-by would have easily melted off with brake cleaner and left you a pristine clean surface on such a low mileage car.

i dont think you need to over think this, I added a generic oil catch from Moroso today..

Bumping an old thread here, but I recently installed my TRD air intake and saw this same scenario with black soot or carbon in my throttle body during install. Was a little concerned at first, but eventually just let it go. Glad to see its nothing out of the norm especially since I've only got just under 10,500 miles...
