Start-Up Idle Drop (VIDEO)

If anyone is encountering this on initial start-up, I'd love to hear your thoughts. I really don't know what to think. I've read through the other posts about idle drop after stopping, between 1st and 2nd, etc. but this seems a little different. I'm not noticing any other significant drops any other time throughout a commute.

Looks normal to me. Engines have a "fast idle" when the engine is started and the coolant isn't fully up to temp. It helps get thicker oil flowing and getting the cats lit sooner.

I was staring at it the whole time and didn't see anything wrong. :)

Thanks guys :) i honestly have never seen this before. Or maybe it's just the first time I've paid so much attention to the car

Thats normal, the ecu is set to idle high like 1100rpm until the coolant reaches a certain temp. Then will step the idle down once it reaches operating temp. If you are coasting with the clutch in, it will idle high until stopped.

That video looks like your car is behaving just fine ;)

Don't worry; just like everyone here said... It's completely normal.

I can hear that little old lady now. "Where's the dip"

Was the engine cold? Mine at cold startup revs to 2000 rpm then after 15 seconds drops to 1100 rpm

zelix 08-30-2012 12:54 PM

My cold start revs to 1600 rpm before dropping to 700, hmm seems we have different idles...

No worries man, I would have been curious too. My Celica has never dropped RPM when idling even if I let it sit for 2-3 minutes, so I would've asked questions as well lol.

My warm idle is around 650. This looks pretty normal to me.

Dude - nothing wrong with your car

It did exactly what it's supposed to do when you start it up

fenton 08-31-2012 03:48 PM

When it goes down at the end you can hear the chipping come in. Well i can anyways with in ear headphones. That is probably what makes me angriest about this car.
