Opti-Coat Concerns

I have contacted a detailer in Omaha about applying opti-coat to my new FR-S. They didn't mention anything about the two bucket method, or the clay bar process. Are these things that I truly need to be concerned with?

If that is a yes, is this a task I can conquer on my own? I don't want to give my car to be detailed that someone that may not know the best technique, or may make the car worst off then if I did it myself...

Thanks for your insight ahead of time!

2 buckets may not be necessary depending on the current condition of the car in my opinion. any decent detailer will at least clay and polish the car before applying opticoat.

it's recommended to prep the car by washing, claying, and polishing, to get the best results out of the opticoat.

Thank you Ayau.

My plan is to have the dealer leave the plastics on the vehicle, to minimize the amount of damage done to the vehicle by the grunt detailers at the dealership.

Exactly what I did, and also because there were a few days in-between receiving the car and having it detailed/clear-bra'd/paint protected.

Wise decision!

Are you referring to prior to them applying OC? If they aren't going to completely decontaminate the exterior, then you need to find someone else....

If they aen't mentioning anything about correcting the paint prior to OC then find someone else.....

Also, keep in mind that hardly no new vehicles are perfect. They usually are filled with defects. This means you will either need to correct them or seal them in. If you seal them in, they're there for the long haul. The coating will need to be stripped (extensive), corrected and recoated. Do it right or suffer the consequences.

Thank you!

There is 1 other detailer in the area that I was able to find that offers opti-coat, I will contact them and inquirer about their process, however I think it's wise to forget about the first one.

Agree with David. I've done a few FRS's with shipping plastic and even those weren't nearly perfect. They definitely needed claying and some polishing. It may be a significant investment but this is something you definitely want to do right the first time.

As well, I've done two with film still on and after applying IronX, the cars looked like a re-enactment of the St Valentines Day massacre. As stated above, decontamination is extremely important.

I'd just call Dr. G @ Optimum & ask him for a referral. It's gets no better then that! He's the all mighty one and you have to get your Opti-Guard (professional version) through him so he knows who's in your area.

Tell him I say hi!!

Yes I did. A friend of mine actually does detailing on the side and did a fantastic job. PM me and I'll give you his number.
