No winning argument

So today went to lunch w few of co-workers and while waiting in line we were talking about AE86 (cuz today is 86 day).

Anyways, while talking, some dude behind me start talking w us and this is how conversation went.

dude: "AE86? That's weak! They don't have hp like Veyron"
me: "Yes, you're correct. iirc 86 only have 130 vs Veyron have over 1,000. BUT you're comparing two different type of cars here."
dude: "So?"
me: "First of all, you're comparing car that was made in 80's vs Veyron which was made 5~6yrs ago."
dude: "How bout Ferrari Testirola? It was made in 80's and they had 400hp"
me: "Ferrari what?"
dude: "Testirola"
co-worker: "You mean Testarossa?"
me: "Again, you gonna compare 5L H12 engine against 1.6L I4 engine. 2 different types of cars"
dude: "How about Supra. They're both made by Toyota. Supra has over 300hp."
me: shakes my head side way and move along

Seriously, made my lunch crappy. Anyone had those kind of no winning argument/conversation? Other person just don't get it, just wanna kill yourself or wanna smack em on back of their head.

I get it alllll the time when it comes to people talking about their camera lens/body or computers. -_-

xantonin 08-06-2011 08:33 PM

Your problem was you tried to explain to him where he was wrong.

If you just point and laugh, and call them stupid, it makes them feel awkward and go away defeated.

its ok. the vast majority of people i meet base what they know about cars solely on hp numbers just like the guy u met today. easiest way to prove em wrong is drag their candy ass in to the passenger seat and take them for a ride through some twisties:)

Last week ;) ;)

If it was me I wouldn't have even engaged dudes first line. I would have just sputtered, turned around, and laughed at him.

I mean... dudes epic line of truth is nearly faultless for those with limited car knowledge.

dude: "Ferrari 458 Italia? That's weak! They don't have hp like Veyron"

No Way! Really? Gold Star bud. (friendly sarcasm inbound)

Haha, yeah that's always good.

Extreme sarcasm wins.

Met too many people that were just like that especially my junior year in high school.

Then again, it was high school, can't expect too much.

That convo is funny. Some people need a good slap.:slap:

Random_Art 08-07-2011 12:34 AM

my non-winning conversations usually involve trying to hold any kind of scientific debate with creationists. They were fun at first, but now they just make me want to go and cry in a corner for the future of the human race.

Oh jesus, I can relate.

Here's a short list:

[This happened right after I bought my Subaru]
"Why don't you get a VTA BOV, dude? I would just get one of those and let it be. Maybe a really loud one!"
[This is also coming from someone who claims to be a human Subaru encyclopedia.]

/futile argument

[Also directed towards the Subaru]
"Nice turbo! How much boost are you running?" [He's clearly pointing to my alternator]
"Uhh.. A little bit over 9000."

/ignorance

This last one isn't really an argument at all, but it's still sort of funny. A guy brought his old Saab into the shop I hang out at wanting to fix a few things. He insisted upon us changing his turbo oil. Apparently, it hasn't been changed in over 10,000 miles.

I'm not making this up, I promise.

Ichi, I'm surprised you even let the conversation go for that long. You should have turned around the moment he said, "AE86, that's weak"!

It happens all too often and probably worse with motorcycle riders. Since San Diego is a huge miltary town, Marines on bikes are the worst! God Bless them for serving our country but the moment they hop on a bike, they become a bunch of idiots!

hahahaha
this thread makes me lol

i didnt think the 86 was that good. back when it was priced for what it was it was a cool car to have tons of fun in for next to nothing. now they are super expensive and it seems like the miata is the new little guy that people havent caught onto yet. and with that you get irs, better lsd, soft top (for better or worse), less miles, stiffer chssis, airbags, lighter weight, more power, better brakes etc. i dont see anything the ae86 does better aside from sliding around with that rear axle....sorry i had a couple beers and that doesnt really relate to the op in any way but just because the coworker was an idiot doesnt mean we should throw out what he was saying even though the comparison was retarded

Wait...did you say that people haven't caught on to the Miata yet?! Really? There will have been 1,000,000 Miata sold very soon.
