Subaru parts fiches - supersession?
I guess supersession means a part has been superseded by another. But when the parts fiche says supersession:[part number] does that mean the part number is the old superceded part or the part number of the new replacement?
Just been given the wrong part number yet again by my local dealer, and I need to give them the number of the new part, and specify I want exactly that. In this case I ordered a new serp belt tensioner, and asked for 23769AA110 as per this parts fiche: https://parts.subaru.com/p/Subaru_20...3769AA040.html But I got given part 23769AA111, which doesn't fit. However if I look at the parts fiche for the forester, the 2 parts appear interchangeable: https://parts.subaru.com/p/Subaru__/...3769AA111.html So - when I see: Part Number: 23769AA040 Supersession(s): 23769AA110 Does it mean the current part is 23769AA040, and the old part is23769AA110, or is it the other way around? Thanks! |

Basically, what it means is that your part number was replaced by the newer part number.
Supercede means that this is the greater (newer) part. Supersession means that a greater (newer) part is now what is used. I can't quite track what you're trying to demonstrate in your example. However, here is a pic of what it looks like at their online catalog. Quote:

So when the BRZ parts fiche says: Part Number: 23769AA040 Supersession(s): 23769AA110 It actually means that 23769AA040 is the newer part, and 23769AA110 is superseded. So when I went in and gave the old part number 23769AA110, the parts guy accidentally ended up on the forester parts fiche where it says: Part Number: 23769AA111 Supersession(s): 23769AA110 So he then gave me part 23769AA111 which is compatible with the forester, but doesn't fit the brz - even though the original tensioner must have fitted both the forester and brz. On the upside, while i was at the dealer I did pick up some much needed new wiper blades, and replacing the serpentine belt and tensioner was way easier than expected. So not a bad day. And I learned always to triple check my parts before driving away from the dealer. |

So, what I was saying was what Subaru was saying. However, I was just searching on the part number. If you go to an online Subaru dealer and search for your own vehicle, you'll get the right part and the supercession probably. Either way, here are a couple of screenshots with some additional info that might help. The first one was the result of the search for the new part number, the second one was the search for the superceded part number. It's almost hilarious how they showed up.

The whole wiper. Just the rubber bit wasn't stocked by the dealer, and is unavailable at all the online places I looked at, so I'd guess discontinued. |

For the FA20 Turbo engines, AA040 was superceded by AA110 and in turn AA111. As you observed, this part does not fit the BRZ alternator bracket. While you did order AA110, I believe that even if they'd procured one of those for you, it'd be exactly the same problem. For the FB25 engines, AA040 was superceded by AA05A. This part does fit the BRZ alternator bracket. Sadly, I don't know a reliable way to find the correct part number for situations like this. I've found some sites are better than others, but I think it's that Subaru keeps changing the database - not always correctly - and some sites may have older data around. So some sites may have correct data while others are incorrect, and who's right and who's wrong depends on whether the data was broken or fixed by the change. |
BTW, for everybody's references, here are the TSBs I'd referred to:
