Unofficial - CEL/SL/Idle Issue List for FR-S/BRZ Owners

Folks, my goal is to document the number of owners, their mileage, status of their cars along with other pertinent info. I feel it will be a good snapshot to help understand the severity and broad reach of this problem.

BACKGROUND
While this idle issue may manifest itself as an initial dip, please only add your name if you have experienced a combination of the check engine light (CEL) and slip light (SL) in addition to the RPM hunting at idle (often severe shaking and stalling). The code your engine control unit (ECU) should have stored is P0019 (also optional P0017, P0018 or related cam codes).

Toyota and Subaru have developed various solutions for this issue which have not been consistent and may require multiple repairs or even vehicle replacement due to limited success. Repairs could include a combination of the following: replacing cam sprocket assemblies, replacing oil control valves, reflashing and/or replacing the ECU. To expedite service and express your concerns, be sure to contact the corporate customer service numbers below.

Mine's on the 3rd week in the shop as well. Parts are on back-order. VVTi Cam gear and Oil control valve are what they claimed to be replacing. Waiting on gaskets which are on back-order, apparently.

Awesome idea, I think this is a good candidate to be stickied. I have a feeling this is a lot more prevalent than Scion/Subaru would like to admit.

Subie 08-24-2012 11:26 PM

The last six of the VIN is the unique vehicle identifier, not the last four. If you're going to have posters blank out the last two digits, you should ask for the last six digits to track production dates accurately.

Zadkiel 08-24-2012 11:43 PM

It's never good when there's no rhyme or reason to the VINs. That usually means it's an engineering problem, right?

Yruyur 08-24-2012 11:47 PM

You could create a google docs form like the ended up doing for the ecu flash group buy. Have all the questions and let everyone fill it out for you. Great idea and good scrubbing of the threads!

Engineering or unidentified production issue.

White64Goat 08-25-2012 09:43 PM

Just an FYI. FR-S last 6 start with 70, BRZ starts with 60, so if you posted what type of car you have, the last 4 will suffice. :party0030:

I'm surprised there are that many. What has been the fix for these? Is it the ECU or the cam sensors or something else?

Adjusted to 29 since I had a duplicate entry, but still high considering the small percentage of owners on this forum. The fix has either been the VVT cam sprocket replacement, misc. sensors/valve associated with the VVT system, a new ECU, or a combination of those parts. Toyota and Subaru have not been consistent with the replacement of parts to date but a majority have been getting the VVT cam sprocket.

My problems started as soon as I picked up my car on Tuesday of last week.
Around 8 miles on the clock when CEL/SL came on.
No doubt a shameful record..
Experienced idle dip, shudder, loss of power, near stalling, bogging down..

Just called the service dept. today and they are expecting the parts to come in on Wednesay (coming from New York).

They will be replacing a camshaft position sensor and another sensor. They told me the camshaft sensor is a larger, sealed unit. I don't know what that means but I guess it includes many parts. They said it's a pretty big job and that toyota is aware of the problem (obviously).

I honestly wouldn't drive the car any further than it takes you to deliver it to the dealership. Because of the number of reported incidents, I suspect that the only way you will be truly "in the queue" is if they take possession of the car and hand you keys to a loaner - the dealer has skin in the game at that point. More importantly, several of the posts here suggest that additional damage has occurred in some cases as the car continued to be driven.

Just my 2 cents...

Best of luck!

update on mine- one week in the shop, change cam sensor and ecu at 200 miles, no issues now at 1100 miles

kndonlee 08-28-2012 08:24 AM

Glancing at the VINs, they seem to be in the 2600-2700s for the BRZs and the 7000s for the FRSs. Though I see that single 800ish FRS entry.

TurnOne 08-28-2012 02:27 PM

Add me to the list. Problem started with about 250 miles. Dropped at dealer today with 335 miles on it. Reset the light twice, came back within a few miles. One time both lights were illuminated and the 'traction' light went out for a few seconds, then came back on. CEL was on the whole time. FR-S VIN#7969.

Chris

alrashwa 08-28-2012 08:33 PM

Looks like we have a couple cases of the issue being repaired and failing again post-repair. I'm asking soconfoozed and Hammer for more details on their last status updates. Already printing out the Washington State lemon laws for mine. I think I'm done with this car.

iheartartoo 08-28-2012 09:22 PM

I'm in the same, sad boat. Started at about 110 miles, in the shop now. FR-S, VIN# 7071XX.

I just wanted to say that i was 1 step away from putting down a deposit and ordering a silver FRS from our Scion dealer when i came across this thread. Needless to say, i backed out of the order. Very disappointed that toyota/subaru would sell a product with this major of a design flaw. Is this isolated to the USA or are cars in other countries going down as well?

Will do. From what I understand, you did not take it to the dealer and never reset the code, right? Also, do you still experience idle issues?

Avoided the dealership like a plague...only time it was reset was when doing dyno runs with/without CEL/SL (posted elsewhere) and even then it came right back on as soon as i left the shop...and no idle issues for at least 500 miles (dont remember exact mileage). If it comes back or i notice any idle problems i will post here to let you know. Maybe it has something to do with exhaust backpressure :iono: .

There was one thread where a guy had a completely new ECU unit which ended in 811 I believe instead if 810. That seemed to fix the issue at least in his case.

Like every other cars some has flaws and that why they have recalls. give subaru/toyota a break its the brz/frs's first year a new engine platform and dont expect it to be perfect.

instead of looking into the negative issues on ome of the cars why not try to see all the positive feedbacks and reviews.

Eurospeed, would it be beneficial to put the name of the service rep's we are currently talking to on here with our info? I don't mean to make the list too verbose, but I've noticed when I reference anything I've read on here, the reps pretend the forum doesn't exist.

I'm sure a few of us must have been talking to the same guys who continually deny that they've ever heard of the issue. I've been working with Darren and now Clayton at Toyota HQ for my region, which I think is in Cali.

If you think it would be helpful, by all means, however the reps I have been dealing with have been less than stellar.
