Whine while reversing, but only while turning
 

I've got a new one for the group...

My brother and I both have 2013 first model year 6MT BRZs. He's had his since new I've put 100k+ on mine. Drove his over the holidays to the store and he definitely needs a new wheel hub, but I also heard a noise I'm not familiar with (and didn't see in the search on here).

While reversing out of a parking spot, all is normal until you cut the wheel and then you get a noticeable medium/high pitched whine. Doesn't happen in neutral or going forward rolling or stopped. I've done the steering rack on mine (clunking while parallel parking) and it sounds nothing like that.

Any ideas?

Where does the noise come from (front or rear)? What size wheels & tires does he have?


It's fairly common on wider wheels and tires to rub the firewall in the front. That might make a humming nose from the front
