De-tune to reduce power
Asking honestly, is it possible to change a few values via romraider to reduce power & increase reliability? I know I can limit max rpm & reduce pedal input by some percentage. I optimized the tune (to my ability) with the help of the community & datazap some 7 or 8 years ago.
14 6mt w/ 147xxx miles, engine never been cracked open, catless headers stock front & mid pipes, tuned on OFT stage 2. Anticipated starting from a stage 2 91 tune OTS since quality 93 is not likely avaialble in future location. Don't intend to swap back to stock header but can if ultimately needed & start from a 91 stage 1 tune. thinking of handing down my gen1 to my kid to go away to school. It just kinda makes the most financial sense, and gives me space for a gen 2! but he's already gotten in a bit of trouble in his short driving career, thus my question. Thank you for any advice, not in a rush, looking to possibly make the switch this summer. EDIT: for clarification, owned since 2k mi, so im the only one to have abused it in the past. been absolutely reliable, except that darn squeaky TOB got changed w/ fresh clutch pack. the desire for longevity was a function of reducing the pedal percentage & max rpm. possibly pulling some timing somehow. was reading restricting air flow could also cut power, but didn't know if that was a better route than remap tune. |
Reducing power is not going to help with reliability at all. Putting all hardware back to stock can help though- heat management under the hood is one of the biggest long term contributions to a long life for things like your coil packs, wiring, plastics, etc. stock headers have heat shielding and most aftermarket headers don't.
I'd freshen up some bushings, engine mounts, put the stock headers and stock tune back on. It'll have a great life |
Modifying the engine won't keep its longevity, whether it's tuning or adding aftermarket parts. Always keep the car stocked and perform routine maintenance and replace necessary components (e.g., bushings, serpentine belt, etc.).

The stock tune isn’t great, especially in the really early cars. You aren’t hurting anything having it tuned.

well detuning a little bit so that it never knocks surely help eith longevity
open Base timing B and reduce -0.70 everywhere and also copy transient ignition retard table from >2017 stock tunes |

Just run a stage 1 tune and limit the speed governor to 95 mph, no harm no foul until you can trust him. |
