JDL Spal Fan Shroud and Fans Wiring
After doing some research, it would appear that the proper way to use the Spal fans in the JDL fan shroud is to use the Spal relay kit(s) and use the stock wiring to signal the relays.
The question is this; where is a good place to get the 12v power for the fan relays? I have the wiring diagram for the car but I don't see any clear area in the under hood fuse box where I can grab 12v. Does anyone have a good diagram and/or pics of how they did this? |

OK, well, since there don't seem to be many that can or will respond, I guess I'll dump what I've figured out here to see if that generates any conversation.
I have created a wiring diagram and I also have a diagram of the OEM fuse box under the hood to aid in some of my thinking. The biggest question I really have is how to connect the Spal relays to the OEM plugs to allow the ECU to control the fans. |

OK. Using some resources outside of here, I think I figured it out. Since there doesn't seem to be anything readily available, here is a JDL Dual Spal Fan to 2013 Subaru BRZ OEM fan conversion wiring diagram. Maybe those search terms will bring people here.
I created about 75% of this diagram. I could have recreated the OEM section of the diagram but I'm too lazy to do that. If anyone things I'm off on this, let me know. |
That is how I wired mine.

I recently installed the SPAL 1328 fans and shroud from JDL. In my communications before purchasing they told me via email "Our SPAL Fans and fan shroud do require splicing into the OEM harnesses but it's super easy as they are just a simple positive negative circuit. The OEM electrical system handles them just fine but you could always run direct power with your own wired relay too if you chose to"
The OEM fans each have a connector you can steal if you don't intend to re-use or sell them. One fan has the connector and wires, the other fan I took apart and removed the connector. The one with wires is easy enough to snip and splice onto one fan. The other one I added slightly oversized pins to the SPAL wires and filed them down until it was a snug fit in the connector then heat shrink around it to secure everything. Both kick on just fine and have had no issues without using a relay. I'll try and get some pictures of how I did it. |
I actually ended up just connecting mine to the OEM wiring. I did go a little more sophisticated and got the appropriate plugs/pigtails from iWire. It works like a champ.
