HELP!! Installing Piston Ring (Oil Control Rail without Tab)
2 Attachment(s)
Hi all, so does anyone have experience with installing rings on OEM pistons. I got these dnj piston ring set but for some reason the oil control rails (both top and bottom) does not have the tabs that locks the ring in place. I checked if I got the wrong product but everything checked out. so my question is how do I go forward with the installation with product in my hand.
been waiting for the manufacturer to replay back to my email but I hope I get some feedback from here! Thank you! |
Those tabs are very rarely seen on any rings. Just assemble new ones as normal.

Yeah mostly seen on Boxer engines but Subaru seems to be very specific about this tab. I wonder why a manufacturer would miss out on such specification.

This is the instruction manual.

Rings very slowly rotate as the engine is running. I guess they're trying to avoid having the oil ring gap end up at the lower side of the piston as oil can seep through the gap when the engine is stopped. Boxer engines often give a puff of smoke at startup because of this.
|
So, technically installing it wont be causing fatal engine issues other than the start up smoke?
btw, really thankful for your input here! |
No fatal issues. I run custom made pistons in mine with a bit looser clearance and aftermarket rings. I get a puff of smoke once every 8 or 10 starts.

Wonderful! cant thank you enough for your time brother!

It won't be a major issue but you will burn more oil if the gap droops down towards the bottom. |

can you please explain what you mean by the gap dropping down? |

First go to a hardware store and purchase 2 large hose camps that wiil go over the piston. Stop at the grocery and buy a can of beans (that is slightly larger than the piston). Empty the can of beans and cut both ends out of the can. Cut the can open longways. Place the rings on the piston, cover piston with the can with rings in place and clamp down tight. Place the piston on top of the cylinder block. Gently pound the piston out of the can into the cylinder block using the wooden handle of a large hammer. Yes, I am OK, it's just a slow day in Puyallup - :( |
I'd throw those DNJ rings in the garbage...but if you insist on using them, be sure you properly file fit them with the proper end gap...they are not ready to just install....
