SoloStorm - OBD w CAN Adaptor

Purchased the OBD tool - https://www.petreldata.com/product/s...ivity-package/.

Wanted to better understand how we set it up. I do have the CAN adaptor. But I can’t seem to get the formulas to work on pulling gas trace, steering wheel angle, etc. Curious if someone had a simple walkthrough as to how to set it up for someone who is confused. Thank you!

SoloStorm does not support brake or steering angle logging through OBD2, I believe.

I can't seem to find anything from them that indicates the answer to this one way or the other.

Looking at this product: https://www.petreldata.com/product/r...k-data-logger/

It would seem that it has CAN bus access for pre-2022 86 cars via the OBD port. For 2022+ 86 cars it appears that they offer an adapter to get CAN bus access.

Are you saying that brake and steering angle are not available via CAN bus in our cars or are you saying that SoloStorm/Petreldata can't get to it?

I've owned this setup for a while. My throttle, RPM and at least one other input worked fine for my Focus RS. The same equipment has been hit-or-miss for throttle and RPM only (at best) in the 6 years I've used things on my BRZ. Getting the dongle to pair with Solostorm is the biggest challenge. I give up on it more than I achieve any measure (pardon the pun) of success.

SoloStorm cannot access the data through a regular OBD2 device because SoloStorm does not support direct CAN access. It needs to use a pass through device such as RaceCapture.

I have brake, steering, throttle, etc. on my car using a RaceCapture Track Mk2.

OK. The thing I linked to is a RaceCapture Track MK3. So, if you're using that and Solo Storm then you can get CAN data like is needed?

Something to consider, the MK3 has GPS and accelerometer including OBD and CAN data so, if you're starting from scratch, the price isn't terrible. If that included with Solo Storm/Circuit Storm is less than ~$700 it would seem like a decent deal.

Correct, RaceCapture lets you get the CAN data. On a 2nd gen twin you need a CAN adapter harness, CAN isn't exposed on the OBD2 port. That's another $40-100 depending how you accomplish it.

So I have the CAN adaptor and the OBD dongle from them. Just not the RaceCapture.

So I need to get the RaceCapture to be able to pull any of these details? Brake, gas, steering, etc? Specifically for SoloStorm use.

OK, that all checks with what I've read. Thanks for clarifying. Looks like Petrel has a cable/adapter to get CAN data for 2022+ cars.

It sure sounds like it.

You can get gas and RPM from the "normal" OBD2 dongle, just not steering and brake or other data.

If you can get the obdmx whatever software to pull can channels and data - which iirc is possible on the early cars and that system, solostorm should be able to see it and log it. I’d at least fiddle with that for an hour or two before giving up on a $100 piece of hardware.

You may have to manually map a can channel in the obd reader, save that profile so it loads up every time you hook it up, and then map that channel on the solostorm side as well.

I've been using a OBDLink MX+ in my 2013 for awhile. I have been using Track Addict but I also tried Race Chrono. What I discovered with Race Chrono was that it would do OBD or CAN but not both at the same time. The research indicated that you needed two devices to interface with that purpose in mind. I also discovered that CAN didn't offer the same stuff as OBD and vice versa (at least with Race Chrono).

SoloStorm *does not* support adding channels beyond throttle and RPM unless you're using a RaceCapture.
