New User Signup Down

Apparently new user signup is down. This site is as good as dead if this doesn't get fixed. I know it's already being discussed in another thread but that seems to have lost focus.

I just tested (up to filling up the info), it’s working fine. Not sure where or what part is not working in the registration.

OK. I'm just going by what someone recently posted and it's not the first time. It could be tied to the database errors. I'm not a DBA but you may want to check the logs and see if there are some recurring errors with certain tables.

That's assuming you have access to the back end.

Sadly no… I’m just a simple mod. I got very simple things I can do & not able to do a lot of backend stuff… with that sad, I’ll forward this info to admin to double check this issue.

It would be nice if the admins would let us know if they are trying (or planning) to address the issues we are seeing with the database. I can tell you it's not isolated and it is spreading to other functions in the BBS. Even as a long time user, it's frustrating and has slowed my usage of the site.

I did notified admin about all the issue. After that, sadly that it’s out of my hand. Mods got a very limited power (other than almighty ban hammer). I’ll gladly do more to help this forum continue working smoothly… but that’s all up to the admin.

Have you heard anything back from admin? The issue has been ongoing for quite some time now without any news...

Sorry, nothing. Usually he doesn’t update me or members. He usually fix it without any announcement.

That's unfortunate. Given the time you donate, you'd think the Admin would show a little more respect at least to you.

I have no issue w him not giving me the update. I wish he fixes the issue quicker. I know he owns several other forums & it can be handful taking care all of em. This is why I’ve request to give me a bit more access, so I can take care some of the things, so he can handle other things. Data issues, I can’t help… but approving new staff & etc, I can def help.

All good man. This is a somewhat commonplace problem with these forums. One of the biggest challenges is keeping the forum up to date. At this point there is no support from vBulletin since the version the forum is running came out in 2016. I see the site says it's version 3.8.11 and they are up to version 6 now.

These forums are pretty brittle and unless you have someone that is a legit DBA nerd then your chances of both staying current and fixing database issues is pretty slim.

I went through the same thing with my local SCCA region. In the end we just killed the forum because no one was using it anyway. That's not the case here so I hope you're able to work through it.

I'm sorry but this would drive me nuts, and likely make me stop volunteering. If I send someone a note, I expect an answer out of common courtesy, particularly when I'm providing "free" labor.

Now, that said I greatly appreciate the service this forum provides, so I'm only complaining "this much"...

Nothing that an 8-ball in a sock can't handle. :D

The long term costs in time and $ to keep something you created working are a real thing. I can only imagine what the backend and server look like for this site with all of the posts, embedded content, traffic, etc over the years. Add in dealing with the bad actors on the Internet (there are MANY) and it takes work to keep it going.
