cheapest sub 2.00 BW CW13 car out
I am going to move on from the twins platform. I want to try something different. Looking for the cheapest sub 2 min RWD platform car at buttonwillow CW13 layout that can be still street legal and minimal mods required. I am guessing the C5 might be but I am open to ideas. Different flavors is the spice of life ;)

An old Camaro or Mustang. Or even a vette. It's not cheaply sustainable, but it's the cheapest one lap wonder. |

A C6 might be worth looking at. While a C5 Z06 is really cool, the standard C6 makes nearly the power and has a better cooling system, I'd care to bet a Z51 package car would be very nearly as fast on the track.

C5 electronics are old and really becoming a problem. You almost need to go standalone with them. Plus there is something about them where you lose ABS if you want to get ride of SC 100% (and 1997 SC sucked).
It's not the "cheapest" but the C6 is the way to go, imo. Costs a bit more but upgrades are totally worth it. The widebodies came with big brakes. They have padlets which is kind of annoying, but for only 4 or 5 hpde a year, meh. All they need is fluids and depending on your location, track and skill level, a little more cooling. You can probably find a bunch of turn key "HPDE Ready" C5 and C6s for a great price. |
A buddy of mine swapped out his FR-S track/autox car for a C6 GS and couldn't be happier. I've talked with him about his reasons and why the C6 GS over other Corvette's, and from what he's said the C6 GS sounds like it might be the best fit for your situation.
Here's the long term review he did on the vette: https://www.everydaydriver.com/singl...ng-term-review |
I come from a C6 w/ Z51 daily driver that did track days - and now have a dedicated FR-S track car.
The first big problem for me was the seat. Stock Corvette seat don't hold you at all. They're really really bad track seats. So I got a harness bar, 6pt, Kirkey. It was fantastic. Overnight I went from beginner to intermediate. The other big problem was brakes. Hybrid duty pads suck. So I got track pads. That was great on the track and not on the road. Then I ended up with an awesome track day Corvette that sucked 360 days a year. So I sold it and replaced it with a better daily and a dedicated track day car: the FR-S. |

You should never run "hybrid" pads. They are noisier and have more dust than needed on the street but definitely don't have enough on the track once you get even halfway competent. The only "dual duty" brakes I know of are carbon ceramic. It's even worse for beginners because street pads (and hybrid pads are street pads) go from about 90% to 10% in one stop. Race pads fade far more progressively. I wont get in a car unless it has race fluid and race pads. Been there, done that, no thank you. |

On the C6, I used OEM C5Z06 front pads for several years. With ATE Super Blue. That's what I mean by hybrid pad. They're not a terrible pad, but not a pure race pad like the PFC I got in the end. |
