**help**86 TRD lowering spring causing issue
Hi, I'm new to here and wanted some advise if anybody experienced this.
I have a 2013 manual Scion FRS / 86. About 2years ago I installed TRD lowering coil kit (springs) on my stock KYB shock, strut kit. The KYB shock/strut kit was brand new also at the time just two years ago but now my cars tire makes screeching noise when I turn at a corner at very low speed like 5kmph, just slowly turning at a traffic light but tire sounds like I'm going at 100kmph drifting. I installed new sway bar links and tire still has tread. I brought it to my mechanic and he said my upper strut mount is worn due to the TRD spring that I installed and its causing higher spring rate so the KYB regular strut mount got worn so therefore its effecting the tire noise. Is that true? and what solution I would have? My mechanic said I should install aftermarket strut mount so it can withstand the TRD spring rate but when I called around for aftermarket strut mounts, they said most of them will only fit aftermarket coil kits like TEIN,etc and not on a regular KYB. I was thinking of getting a TRD strut mount but I heard it only fits JDM 86??? Mine is N.America. Has anybody installed TRD lowering springs and had there other suspension parts damaged due to it? Any advise would be great please! |
No need to for after market strut mount. Change to OEM or replacement parts.
Maybe you can confirm the diagnostic with this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paBYjdiKJtg |
I had TRD Lowering Springs on a FRS and they blew out the stock rear dampers every 5K miles.
Luckily it was still under warranty the whole time. |
They pair much better with the Sachs dampers.
OP, did you get an alignment after the install? |
The strut mounts were known weaknesses of the OEM suspension, so if they've never been replaced, they'd likely be bad by now even with everything else stock.
I did the TRD springs, which quickly blew out the OEM struts. I swapped to Bilstein's with new mounts and haven't had any problems since (it's been probably five years now). |
I remember when I did my suspension (Bilstein struts, Whiteline sway bars) I had considered getting more robust top hats. I can't remember if they came from the PP stock setup or maybe from the WRXs (?) but they weren't cheap. Recently my suspension does a lot of clunking (thanks to these wonderful CA roads). I new alignment may be in order.

Like mentioned, while you are in there I would look into upgrading those KYB to used Sachs from a forum member (cheapest) or new Bilstein b6 or b8 (relatively expensive). |
I ran TRD Pro Kit springs on used Koni Yellows using Pedders offset (-.75) top mounts for about 20,000 kl. This combo performed admirably without any noises. Koni’s being adjustable gave me sweet street and track flexibility.
Have now moved up to Ohlins R&T with adjustable camber plates which do forward vibration/noise to the cabin, but tolerable. |
