Whining noise on cold start
Hey all,
2013 Frs 78k miles. Replaced belt a few months ago after a slight squeak I was having. Seemed to solve that issue. But now on cold starts I have another weird sound. Seems to go away after a few minutes. Basically after the high rev warmup and then the noise goes away. Doesn’t matter if the clutch peddle is pressed or not. No issues changing gears. No slipping My fork does squeak a bit but has for over a year. I have a new clutch ready to go in but just have not installed yet. The car runs and drive great. If anyone has any suggestion on what this noise could be I’d be happy to listen. I am not sure if this could be the TOB and a input shaft. I’ve heard they can make these sounds at times but I am not very knowledgeable on clutch and transmission issues. Also thinking it could be a pulley. But I can’t pinpoint where the sound is coming from when I pop the hood. Thanks. Please be gentle |
Thank you editing. On this forum, we are sticklers for proper grammar.
Please post a video with the sound included along with your weight, height, and eye color. With this information we can make wild guesses as to what the sound may or may not be. |
Got jokes hah. I’ll be out in my garage later. I’ll
Make a video for ya. Thanks for getting back to me in a timely manner. |
If it really gets to bugging you, I could swing by sometime.

Dude that would be awesome. I didn’t want to bug you. But I thought about it

If anyone's interested, looks like we'll be dropping a transmission.

So I dropped by @ultramoroons place today, he generously offered to help me install my new clutch.
As we were assessing the car, he brilliantly informed me that the TOB was not the issue. The cold start squeak seemed to be coming from the drive belt. Although it is brand new and sold as a direct fit, apparently it is too long and a bit to soft. The squeak was easily identified with his help since it only happens when using the throttle. He schooled me on how to identify this and also fixed my squeaky clutch fork. This man is a great teacher and a good friend. I appreciate the help. A lunch on me is not enough payment but hopefully is a good start I had hoped it wasn’t the clutch even though I was excited to get my new one in. But since it doesn’t seem to have any sign of issues after a “professional” took a look, it can sit in my garage a bit longer. |
