South Western Ontario Gasoline feedback

On a fellow forum member's suggestion, I thought that I would start a thread for South Western Ontario drivers to give their feedback (both good and bad) with respect to gasoline and what you have noticed with different brands (eg. crickets or no crickets).

Shell 91, no crickets. 5 or 6 fillups already.

Shell 91 VPower, no crickets, living the dream (is Toronto SW Ontario??)

Technically Toronto isn't SW Ontario, but that's cool, was just trying to make sure that the gas stations were representative of the area. Shell is pretty much everywhere in Ontario, so it sorta qualifies.

Sometimes when you have the incorrect grade of gasoline (not enough octane) or in some cases as a result of Ethanol that gas companies add to boost the octane it causes a "cricket like" sound in the engine. It is especially evident when you have the hood open at idle. I am by no means an expert on the subject, but, from my understanding, it is also known as engine knocking (did some poking on Wikipedia). Anyone more knowledgeable on the subject can correct, but, I hope this helps.

The "crickets" are a sound that has been reported by many coming from the direct injectors (apparently... but I'm not a mechanic, so I very well could be wrong) Other more knowledgable people here have reported it as simply a trait of the direct injection system. Until Scion/Toyota tells me otherwise, I'm not concerned. I don't notice it at all, unless I listen for it.

I have only put in 94 from Petro-Canada since day one. I have crickets, only at idle. Others have said they have had crickets while driving? Nothing on my end.

Perhaps I'll try Shell 91 and report.

Full tank at the moment, give me a week or so.

You beat me to it Demandred7... lol
However, I haven't heard anyone refer to it as knocking.

Sure, I guess we'll let Torontonians in... Just you though.

jk

I consider Toronto SW Ontario.

Here's a cricket thread. I've only read a few pages, but I'm sure there's a lot more info in there. I'll scan though it tomorrow. Oh wait... It IS tomorrow. I really have to get to bed.

I have read some of those posts as well. Not too sure on the mechanics behind the why's and how's. Like yourself, I will only be concerned if I have to be. I am kind of in the dark since I have never owned a car requiring premium and never owned a car with direct injection. Obviously as long as it is 91+ and it says premium, it is all good. I am just looking for an opinion of what might be "better".

VENOM~ 08-23-2012 01:41 AM

thanks for the info guys. i really hope this issue is resolved

I read a little bit of the thread and skipped a few spots. It obviously starts out calling it an issue with the car, but, that is certainly not proven at this point. Not reading the whole thing, I got out of it that ethanol might be the issue. The FR-S / BRZ might just not be happy with anything less than "pure" gas. As to why, I could only guess and that is not helping anyone.
