Any interest in a T56 swap?
 

I was googling around and ran across www.grannasracing.com. They make T56 swaps for various cars.

They would be willing to develop a kit if at least "20-30" folks were interested. The kits run $5500-6000 incl the transmission.

If there is enough interest generated on this forum, I will contact Gannas Racing on how we can proceed.

Mazworks offers a CD009 swap kit already for the FA20. The advantage of the T56 magnum might be lots of gearing options. Both use a custom bell housing, so I'm curious what are you looking for with a T56 over the CD009? The other advantage for using a T56 magnum is that a person could do a LS or 2JZ or K24 swap in the future and run a separate bell housing already available for those engines. Because the T56 magnum requires a custom bell housing, there are multiple options, but this is not the case for the CD009; there are CD009 swap options, but many are adapter plates and not adapter bell housings.

Currently, the CD009 is the only way (that I know of) to get a stronger transmission in a twin. IMHO: It would be nice to have more options.

Quicktime might be another company to contact to make a bellhousing adapter.

If this doesn’t catch enough interest, you might want to revisit this topic when companies (if companies) release FI kits for the FA24 platform. At this time, the industry doesn’t seem to be doing much development on products for the second generation like they did for the first generation, including FI. As I see it, that is the biggest problem for you getting interest. FI kits are probably waiting on ECUTEK to finish and maybe they are also doing the CARB route because of the EPA cracking down.

From my limited experience with T56 swaps, I wouldn't recommend it to be mated with an FA20.

1. Gearing, way too tall for a low torque/high rpm engine like the FA20. You can mix and match to get it as close as you'd want with a short final drive, but all those gear cogs are not cheap.

2. Shifting, the stock BRZ/86 transmission with the right shifter is miles better than any T56 shifter. They're extremely stiff and they don't like to go into or out of gear at high RPM. People use them because they are one of (if not the only) option for high HP manual build not because of their shifting behavior.

3. Clutch options. Due to the limited size of the BRZ/86 chassis and engine/transmission matting surface of the FA20, you are limited to clutches with small pressure plates. Mainly twin or triple disk clutches. It might be fine for some, but a twin disk T56 is usually setup to handle at least +700HP/TQ and I doubt many FA20s are pushing anywhere close to that.

From my research, Z32 clutches should work with a T56 as the input splines are identical on paper but no way to check without trying, I couldn't find anyone who tried on the internet. This might allow you to get a single disk clutch in there...

If you're not planning to swap the engine soon, a CD009 is the better option. Or you could look into a BMW ZF 8HP swap. They're cheap and easy to find. A few Euro shops offer adapters for them and I'm sure they would be happy to help make an adapter for you.

Domi-works are great to deal with and made me an adapter in around 2 months.
