Front Suspension 'discovery'?
Looking at the see-through Subaru Geneva display I shocked myself into thinking that it may have a double-wishbone front suspension, instead of the Subaru usual MacStruts.
However I'm putting it in quotes with a question mark because it could just be a support to hold everything together. But here's what I think I see: http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/z...f/IMG_2658.jpg http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/z...f/IMG_2657.jpg http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/z...f/IMG_2608.jpg Like I said, I may be getting over excited on what could turn out just to be something to hold the strut up. But if it is an actual control arm it may look like this: http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/z...suspension.png Here is 'normal': http://i821.photobucket.com/albums/z...inkdiagram.jpg Thoughts? |
It could be, but whether that's the setup that will make it into the production model is anyone's guess.
For comparison: Double wishbone http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/i/20...el-d3398h7.jpg Macpherson Strut http://www.raw4x4europe.com/images/macpherson_strut.gif |
It's not likely the production car will have SLA, even though I'd prefer that. What you see appears to be a brace to hold the strut in position since there's no strut tower sheetmetal.
McPherson is probable because: A) the Subaru press release said so B) the McPherson struts shown in the see-through concept wouldn't be used on an SLA [short/long arm] suspension setup. SLA's typically use compact coilovers that aren't designed for lateral load-bearing. C) the proposed upper control arm angle would result in an asinine camber curve D) the engine shape dissuades upper control arm mounting points E) McPherson strut setups are slightly cheaper, and cheap is a big priority F) hubs and control arms could be easily parts-binned from other Toyota/Subaru cars, since they both use plenty of McPherson setups, thus making the car even less expensive. That's my deduction. |
It looks like a double wishbone suspension. It would be great if they did, but I don't think it will make it.

that concept also has the steering arm in front of the axle (brake calipers behind the axle), whereas the spy photos clearly show the brake calipers in front of the axle and so the steering arm behind. |

They could in theory be using a compact double wishbone setup, like the one Random Art posted! But yeah, I did think of the support, but just never figured out why I never noticed it before. |
Hmm that sucks
I remember thinking this was macpherson from the get go from the pics originally, but then thinking it could be wishbone.. Still confused as back in march But I know for a damn fact that if this has macphersons and costs 40kAUD, the only thing I would benefit from this car over the 8 (1300kg, 185kw, lsd, dwb front with multylink rear) is the proposed low consumption.. In that case everything else would be a step back.. So if they disappoint me here I will be getting a turbo in my 8 :) Win win yea? |
superstrut maybe :)

Struts weren't a deal breaker for me. Cheaper and lighter sounds great, as long as they take the time to tune it - which they seem to be doing.

I still have an old 86.5 hardtop with a 7M and auto that is going to be a guinea pig for above equipment which will include complete control arm and sub-frame replacement (eventually). Is the RX-8 a proper double-wishbone front/multi-link rear like the Supra? |
