Currently running 225 V730 on 9" wheel. Common combo coming from the Miata world. I find this improves the response from the car on turn in. Also gives it playful livlier character. Those are a bit more subjective attributes but Tire Rack did a test different wheel and width combos here:

Man, that's a great test but testing them all on different days kind of kills it. My lap times are pretty damn consistent for a slap**** that kinda shows up the track 15-20x a year, but my lap times easily vary 1-2% from session to session, just because of weather changes.

I went from 2:12.8 in the morning on tires that were bald to low 2:14s in the afternoon on fresh tires yesterday. I'd probably be 2:15s-2:16 on the same tires.

Broken down by tire size, no matter which size tire, the widest wheel always won

I'm not even sure I see a trend in tire size
7s: 225 was fastest
8s: 225 was fastest
9s: 225 was fastest

Stretched, squeezed or just right- it's always the size that's the fastest lol.

It just seems like wider wheels is better.
