there's tons of 'Van' surnames around my area, a large amount of businesses have it as part of their name. it's part of being dutch.

Depending on the area of the german speaker, they read the words closer to what is written.
In a case like this, van der steur could sound like / van-der-stoir/ or /van-der-steer/, which sounds like understeer /en-der-stir/ spoken by german speaker
