Firestone firehawk Indy 500

Looking at new tires

Ideally Michelins Sport 4S but reading good things about the Indy 500’s…

..but reports say can be ”twitchy” in rain

Just how “twitchy” are they?

Spin out happy at 7o mph?

Clipdat 03-31-2023 08:16 PM

They are a good tire, but easily outclassed by the PS4S.

StraightOuttaCanadaEh 04-01-2023 10:29 AM

They're alright. I have them on now, going back to Michelins

RToyo86 04-01-2023 11:26 AM

Biggest thing that impressed me with the PS4S was wet grip. Indy's are a good budget tire if you can get them at a good price.
I wouldn't consider them dangerous in the wet but they're not confidence inspiring like PS4S are.

I run these on 17x9s and have been quite happy with their performance in the rain. No twitchiness to speak of that I've noticed.

I have a set that I use on street and I'm not a fan of them in the rain. They're an okay tire. I'd give them a 7 out of 10.

I have these currently and I'm on my 2nd set actually. I personally really like them for the street and I also have not felt any twitchy-ness in the rain.

brandonblt2 04-04-2023 12:29 PM

On my second set in 255's and supercharged. Never experienced any twitchiness or lose of grip in the rain but I also don't drive crazy in the rain.

new2subaru 04-05-2023 06:03 AM

I wouldn't call it twitchiness in the rain. There are just tires that perform better in rainy conditions IMO. They can lose grip easily when taking off from a standstill driving like a normal human being, which doesn't instill much confidence in braking/turning. I would still say they're a decent tire for the money.

The only time I hydroplane in my car was when I had Firehawk Indy 500s and merging on the highway while it was raining. I spun into a flat ditch and shit my pants. I ordered new tires and switched back to Michelin PS4S....

falken fk510 is very good in wet and worth considering

strat61caster 04-05-2023 07:20 PM

Jesus, $170/each on tirerack right now for oe size 500’s, great tire at $86, and with todays pricing $120ish is justifiable, maybe $140, but $170 is silly.

If I wanted to save money I’d go Hankook or Falken. I’m hearing PS4S ain’t what it used to be so I’ll be sticking with Continental ECS (upgrade to 02) for my next set of daily tires.

Edit; hmm Bridgestone potenza Sports may be viable too…

I'd stick with the Michelins, usually get at least 30k miles out of em, i am guessing the Firestones are about half that.
