Issues with studs / bolts
1 Attachment(s)
Has anyone here had any issues with their studs or any bolts surrounding the suspension area?
Toyota made a recall on the bZ4X/Solterra, which uses the same bolts as the new GR86/BRZ, so I wanted to check if anyone had any problems with their vehicle. Here's an excerpt of the recall: The subject vehicles are equipped with wheels attached to the vehicle with hub bolts. After low-mileage use, all of the hub bolts on a wheel can loosen to the point where the wheel can detach from the vehicle. The cause of the issue and the driving patterns under which this issue could occur are still under investigation. If a wheel detaches from the vehicle while driving, it could result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash. I attached the full recall document as well. |
Who is going to be the brave one to click on that PDF?

Well for what it's worth, the recall was real

It seems like the twins are well know for having their studs chewed up, but I put the blame for that on people used to 1.5 thread toyota studs dealing with 1.25 thread subaru studs, which do not forgive mistakes.
You got a piece of crud on the threads? it's done. you overtorque? it's done. My boss isn't as careful as me and he's definitely wrecked a few 1.25 studs, be it subaru, nissan or suzuki. Couple that with the fact that the finer thread acts as a shallower "wedge", so each blow of an impact gun will more easily "drive the wedge in", they will more easily stretch or break. Comparatively, a monkey can deal with 1.5 thread no problem. My wheels have been off and on... let's see: 6 years, twice or thrice a year, some special occasions here and there... between 12 and 20 times. Studs clean and dry, wheel flange clean with a light coating of white lithium grease, never had threads bugger up or a nut loosen, and at the end of the season they come off with my 3/8th impact gun. |

Not true, the new GR86/BRZ DOES NOT use the same wheel attachment system, or bolts, as the new bZ4X/Solterra.
This is a non-issue, the Solterra (and bZ4X) do not use studs with lug nuts, they use a hub bolt, like german cars. No other Subaru currently uses this design...your GR86 is fine. Picture of said bolt style from the recall: |
