i feel all excited for this car again after reading that

kuruma 07-18-2011 02:35 PM

This article made me very excited, the anticipation for this car has been renewed. It sounds like they are taking the best of the ft86 and frs and making it one.
If they do it right, this will be the first car I consider buying off a new car lot. (I usually prefer to get a car thats a year old because its still new basically and a ton less money)

Thanks for the post. I wouldnt have seen it unless I was on the mail list.

That bit about the engine being based off the EJ20 is the best news I've heard. I always wondered how'd they'd get anything more than 170hp out of a long-stroke FB20, but with a EJ20 and it's over-squared dimensions that's a lot more promising--after all the EJ204 got 190hp, so 10 more with D4-S isn't out of the realm of possibility, esp with Yamaha working on it.

Hopefully the Scion version doesn't come feature-bloated. I like that it'll have the 2000GT-inspired C-pillar too.

You will need decent speakers in the car too, but i doubt that's on the top list of enthusiast's priorities. I'm an audiophile, but the difference between 320kbps mp3's and flacs is noticeable, but ultimately negligible. I could do without the CD player, I never actually use more than once every few months.

I could go without a cd player too and I don't think the speakers will be an important selling point at least to me. I will be looking more at how they will make the engine sound. That is my experience with my WRX, the speakers are not that good, but the quad exhaust system look and sounds pretty danm good. So that is what I'm looking forward to

But Toyota re-casted everything, even down to the engine block with a new design, and with the Yamaha acoustics assigned to make every pulse, beat, and soul of air and vibration to become something to spice performance and tactile feel. Not much is exactly shared with the Subaru engine except the flat four configurations. However, the external mounting points remain the same as the Subaru EJ20, shared for very obvious reasons. That is so YOU can use a Subaru engine to swap if you PREFER the Subaru engine for racing. Why bother with complex fabrication, if Subaru has something you can use from 11 years of WRC?"

So much for the FB20?

What they said = FB20. The engine is still the same general "shape" as the old one :bellyroll:. Don't go crazy with the speculation, guy.

But what they said about the mounting is obvious that this engine will be a little bit easier to swap with a WRX/STI engine if the money/need/want exists. The wiring/ECU is still going to be the hardest part or so I would speculate. w/e.

wow, this is really great news. I really am against buying a new car, but if this is as awesome as I think it is, I will have to go in and buy one when it comes out. I mean, no CD players, roll cage mounts, driver oriented interior, no nav screen, Yamaha development (SHO anyone?), and constant development at the track? This sounds fuckin sweet. I really cannot wait.

I was eating lunch and dropped my thai curry bowl just so I can read this off my phone. AWESOME

Wow, this almost brought a tear to my eye. I knew this day would come, and i never doubted Toyota from the beggining test mules that this, to me, a 16 year old in which his FAVORITE car in the world, is the AE86 (believe it or not) and that one day i would have it one day, this is just the next big thing. Thank you Toyota from the bottom of my heart! :thanks:

I'll explain why the AE86 is still my favorite car to this day, it has sentimental value to it. Here's the story. Ever since i was 14, i watched initial D, researched the car to hell, spent HOURS of my life just reading about the car, watching videos, hunting it down here in South florida looking for one and the few i found where either overpriced or just not right. So one day, i was still 14, i went to a local parkinglot car show they have every friday, and there it was, a MINT, Original, Red AE86, it was perfect, my heart sank. I approached the car with the biggest smile on my face, and i litterally left my dad to see the other cars and i stood there, just mesmerized, looking at it for what seemed like eternity, and the owner came up to me, he was 16! that alone gave me SO much hope, maybe one day i can have one myself! he said he's seen how i look at it, and told me to sit in it, and what happened next will remain with me forever, i was in a red, mint, AE86 hatchback with everything inside just spotless. I swear to all of you reading this, i started to just...Cry. I had tears running down my cheeks and this feeling that i cant get from any other thing in the world. I was crying, and laughing at the same time, they were tears of pure joy, and i havn't even been old enough to drive it, and the car wasn't even mine.

So i thank you Toyota, for giving this 16 year old a grasp of that moment and a load of hope. :)

i dunno about that. why would they have to re-cast anything if the FB cast already exists? or if they were the same, then why not just says its the FB block or based on the FB block?

add into this the long standing rumor that the next WRX will use a version of the FT engine and the idea of a whole new EJ based engine is not out of the realm of possibility...

if you look at the FB, its full of economy car ideas and i was scared of what would happen to the FT if they used it. or how much they would have to change to make it a proper sporting engine... but to re-cast the proven EJ engine, to make it up to date, for the FT and possibly the next WRX??? makes perfect sense...

But I'm hella excited *again* for the FT-86. Still hoping that Toyota releases a Toyota, and not a Scion.

That was an awesome read, by and by. Can't wait to see some photos and hear more of what they speak!

cool story bro. :w00t:

you're one of the reasons why this car is a scion. a relatively cheap sports coupe, with enough street cred to still be cool, is going to appeal to a lot of young people just like you.

AaronCompNetSys 07-18-2011 03:22 PM

Wow, this company wants my money. Way to go Toyota, you are my new hero.

:thanks: Saves me the trouble of pointing that out myself.

Plus, with the EJ mount points this can alter my build plan a bit. I wouldn't have to bore out the block to a higher displacement if I can just drop in a 2.5L EJ engine. This allows me to get an EJ25 to work on for swapping in once the warrantee is up on the car.
