GR86 vs FRS
 

So if I didnt like the handling of my friend's 2015 FRS, would I enjoy the GR86?

That's a really tough question to answer without more context.

Was your buddies car stock? was it on shitty coilovers? cheap tires? nice tires? air ride?

I've owned all three generations, and the GR86 with proper tires and coilovers is insanely good for the price. The steering feel itself is a little bit more disconnected and less raw than the outgoing model, however it makes up for it everywhere else.

The FRS when setup properly is a fantastic handling car, so that's a tough one.

He had an 2015 automatic stock. it didnt really feel like anything special. i dont want to regret spending $31k.

It felt rough or like i was driving a go cart.

Unless you're talking about the ride quality, which is apparently pretty choppy in the early FRS models, smoothed out in the 17+ refresh and continues as such into the GR86.

If you didn't like the handling characteristics of a FRS then a GR86 is not the car for you.

There is no better driver's car for the price, but they are budget-built coupes, and drive like it. If you want a smoother ride, you're going to have to spend more money for something in a similar performance class to get that additional refinement. Or spend a bunch of money on a new BRZ to add some of that refinement. Either way, it costs.

You can go test drive a GR86 to see for yourself, but if this isn't what you are into then it's probably not the right car.

But your profile says you have a 2013 FRS? I am confused as to why you think a 15 and a GR would be massively different somehow.

I think they're significantly different after owning both, but the question of handling is a really odd question, as the outgoing generations are both extremely fantastic handling cars. I feel like if you're upgrading just for handling, you'd be best off investing a few grand into your ZN6 / ZC6 in aftermarket chassis parts before buying the new generation if that was your only concern

But if he indeed does have a 13 the 15 should be almost identical. Even the changes to the GR does not turn it into a totally different car so if the 15 he "drove" feels like a go cart so will the GR.
