2023 BRZ on Bring-A-Trailer

The second gen BRZ has made the big leagues. There’s one being auctioned by a hopeful flipper on the infamous Bring-A-Trailer website, where billionaire tech bros go to show off by spending far more than a car is worth anywhere else:

The automotive tastes of billionaire Gen X-ers can be fickle. It’ll be interesting to see the top bid, and if the flipper gets his hopes for quick profit. It’s been an absolutely insane car market the past couple of years and demand exceeds supply of the new BRZ (I can’t get my hands on one), but sometimes flippers get smacked upside the head:

I hope this person ends up just like the Corolla owner.

Looks like he bought a 1993 MR2 in June 2022 and wants to keep that over the BRZ.

Curious to see if it meets the reserve price and what the final/winning bid will be.

Or that’s what he’s saying in the sale, because coming out and saying ‘I’m trying to flip it for a quick buck’ doesn’t sound as good.

He could still be flipping it, but he did have the winning bid for a MR2.

i haven't watched it too closely, but the few new vehicle auctions i've looked at there have never gone much above msrp unless it's a limited edition/last-of new vehicle. like some of the manual performance cadillacs and such.

this, i'd be pretty surprised if it passed $40k, as it's not really considered rare, or collectible, and is still in standard production in that trim level.

If anyone pays over MSRP for it they are an idiot.

I see you haven't followed auctions on Bring a Trailer yet.

I saw a report on someone trying to do the same thing with a new Civic Type R. That one ended up going poorly for the seller as well.

The nonsense around a new, hyped-up model going for over MSRP isn't new. I think this market has made it more common place due to inventory issues and the insane prices linger much longer. However, some sanity seems to be retuning.

In the end, the original buyer most often suffers by owning a car worth far less than they paid and can't recoup their costs.

Not really, no. I'm not the type to "shop/browse" for something I'm not going to purchase.

But I don't see how that changes my statement. If you pay over MSRP, you are an idiot.

Like the guy at the top of the thread said, BAT auction prices are usually go higher than anything else. I guarantee you there's a tech bro out there willing to pay a $10k delta rather than wait for a new car.

And? Paying over MSRP for a cheap, 4 banger sports car makes you an idiot.

Just because someone will do something, doesn't make it an intelligent decision.

Not saying they're not an idiot. Just saying I can see someone doing it.

Is it a good idea to advertise this car as having an MSRP of $31995 when you're trying to flip it for profit?

Cuz that doesnt sound like a good idea to me....unless he low key trying to say "you can potentially get this car below MSRP"

Course he'd be losing money on it.....
