Twin disc clutch strange noise when driving
 

Like everyone you jump into the Twin disk organic clutch thinking it will be the next best thing. In the begining it was all ok apart from the harsh biting point and getting used to the grab. I went on a long drive that was 200 Km + there and back and as I was getting home a strange bearing noise could be heard from the transmission. I couldn't belive after three weeks of gentle driving the throw out bearing was faulty. The shop who installed it said its a bad throw out bearing. The company who made the clutch was xtreame clutches, but they say its because my car horse power is not up the the same specification has the clutch.

On a cold start it seems all normal, but after 2 mins of driving it comes back.

Xtream said I would have to take the clutch out and send it back to them for warrenty work and then put another clutch in its place. Seems a lot of wasted time and money.

The problem is I cannot just order a new throw out bearing as its specific to the clutch kit.

I would take it apart and inspect. Think there may be more going on besides throw out bearing.

I would work with X clutch on this. I would think you could purchase the parts needed and then send the defective ones back for Warranty consideration. The reason they want the parts back first is most of the failures are installation mistakes.

Is that what Xtreme told you? If you can take a your sample to a good bearing shop my guess is it would be a bearing borrowed from a mainstream vehicle.
I sell bearings for a living, its very unusual for a low volume aftermarket clutch manufacturer to have designed and put in production a bespoke throw out bearing.

Xtream clutch said that I could file a warrenty claim with them, but they would not sell me a throw out bearing unless I send the whole clutch back. As you said they seem to think I am at fault and the shop and have not done the install properly.

What I will do later on in the week is get my Digital Endoscope and see if I can see any issues. Maybe the clutch peddle needs adjusting a bit as some have said the throw out bearing could be rubbing against the clutch. I've noticed a peep whole on the side of the transmission.

I bought the clutch off car mods Australia, so I am still trying to get in contact with them to see if they can sell a throw out bearing. It seems to be a busy month at the moment.

Good luck. I’m still trying to get my head around the mfrs claim that it’s making noise because the engine doesn’t make enough power. Sorry. I may have misread that, but a stock engine is what you have and extreme is claiming that they are full of more shit than a sheep station.

Which leads me to the question of, if you’re running a stock engine why do you need a multi plate clutch?

personally, this would be a non-starter for me.

if i can't buy replacement parts from a company and must treat any singular part of an assembly as an entire non-servicable assembly, it better come complete like an HP printer. in this case, if extreme won't sell a throwout bearing separate from their clutch assembly, they better be selling entire completed transmissions...

the fact that they won't sell individual parts and shout 'proprietary!' about any of things that are likely off the shelf just plain irritates me enough that i'd consider looking somewhere else for a clutch assembly.

The reason for choosing a malti disc clutch was so when running on E85 it wouldn't slip like it did on the previous clutch.

Car is on bald tires and is slipping sometimes.

Yes noise gets worse when driving.

It goes away when clutch id pressed in.

Going to have to get it checked as it sounds serious.

It sounds like it could be vibration / rattle from some sort of imbalance between the clutch and flywheel. I would be inclined to think it's not the throw out bearing. From my experience that is normally heard when depressing or releasing the clutch. (Unless yours has failed completely) ((but in that case you wouldn't be able to drive the car properly))

What style of dual plate are you using?
Are the plates strapped? Or are they floating?
Are you using a lightweight flywheel? Or stock?

Some dual plates are strapped while others float around stands. The strap versions are generally quiet like a stock clutch, while the floater versions have a tendency to produce a slight rattle more so at idle when clutch is released.

Could be gear rattle, or an issue with how the flywheel is bolted up.

This what I am using its a solid twin disc setup.

What I also noticed is the clutch fork is wobbly and I dont remember seeing it shake like its doing.

My car booked in soon, so all I can do is wait until they pull the transmission out and see whats changed. If its a transmission issue I maybe looking at a costly fix.

Anyone have broken transmission that can share there experiences?

By wobbly what do you mean? It there fire/aft play, or is it rotational?

If the tranny is broken I’d recommend looking for a good used replacement.

Edit: my tuition is whispering that it’s probably not the transmission.
