Hang on to (and take care of) your 1st gen cars

I always believed these will be classics and this reinforces that belief even more:

Maybe this will join the AE86 in the GR Heritage Parts section at some point in the future?

I read this with some interest, perhaps another 10 to 15years before classic car collectors start to seek out OEM parts. Aftermarket bits may become 'must find treasures' as future owners may want the JDM tuning scene vibe...

did you read the article?

it has more to do with japan's stringent vehicle certification process than the model of car.

though toyota has made insistence that the 86 is a halo car, so it's understandable that they want to preserve it in that status for a while.

it's also a pretty easy way to get back into the news cycles and generate interest in the newest gen2 as well.

Why bother buying a car if you don't plan to hang onto it?

sometimes, you just need something with 4 wheels to get you from A to B.

I understand, I suppose I meant something "new" since it's such a huge investment

soundman98 01-29-2023 07:33 PM

that was new at one point.

I miss my Tercel.

I'd love to hang onto this car and it ends up being super desirable and costs ridiculous amounts for a clean version to sell..(hello retirement funds lol)

Only problem is i find that i may need a bigger car in the future sooner than later.....(The limitations of a small 2 door coupe is now beginning to show signs of burden)

We already have a second car that belongs to the wife, and she gets choice and whatnot on what she drives, so i may be able to tough it out with keeping my car.

However the car i would be looking to upgrade to is a Lexus IS500.....that car seems like it'll be a candidate to end up being on those collectible car lists someday. (I need to experience that Lexus V8 before i eventually succumb to EV ownership)

Except that the demand to keep any particular model of car past a few years, no less 10 is quite unusual in Japan. If people are willing to pay to keep these cars instead of selling them to be exported, that indicates a strong demand for the car, hence the term future classic.
Of course I read the article, silly!

alex87f 01-30-2023 06:06 PM

Also less export demand since this is a global car ;-)
