The Tech Junkies Lounge

A place to talk about upcoming releases and reviews for any tech hardware.

I'll start.

Ring is releasing a Dash Cam,starts at $199 until 1/31/23. Then goes up $50. I was trying to find out if it does a live recording while driving and detecting accidents but it seems like you can only manually record your trip up to 20 mins.

GPS location (Remote), Two Way Talk (Remote), and other features come with a $6 a month subscription.

Pass. There are much better dash cams for around that price.

I've been looking at getting a dashcam for the longest time but cannot seem to make up my mind. Some have cloud storage, some depend entirely on SD, some record, when parked, only when it feels a hit, so I can never find one that truly fits my needs. I do like some of the features of the ring one, the GPS is kind of a pass because if someone breaks into the car the first thing they would do is rip off the dash cam. I mean, I could get a picture of them, but as far as location, is not really beneficial.

I hardwired my Viofo A129 Pro Duo in the FR-S to enable parking mode. It came with a GPS module (to show speed and location, which might be useful in case a cop thinks you're speeding as it's some kind of proof vs just your word).

I've never been a cloud person, so I prefer SD cards.

Depending on when you drive, actual video quality should be taken into consideration, especially if you drive a lot at night.

Here's a clip of my previous cam, the Viofo A119 at night (in my Yaris at the time)

One thing with event recording is if you have a sub in the car and you like to listen to your music loud, the bass can actually trigger the cam to record an event (just a file that is locked and needs to be unlocked to be erased). Some dash cams are more sensitive than others.

I've, here and there, read about ASUS phones being some of the best there is. But at the same time, usually every new generation of phone such as iPhone, Samsung, Sony Xperia, gets better gaming performance than their last generation.

No such thing.

I think as far as being fully featured and intended for gaming, nothing beats the Asus ROG phones. I do not do mobile gaming or anything of the sort, but I do love technology. The refresh rates on the screens, the battery capability, the effort to make the device comfortable to use in landscape format, the accessories available, the inclusion of a 3.5mm headphone jack ( the only reason I know about these phones honestly) are just a few of what made me want to buy one.

Realistically, I knew it would be a waste on me as someone who just has the phone to take photos and make calls with.

Ring, no way. Too much data abuse.
I've been happy with Street Guardian. A bit more, and they're really just taking their choice of what's out there and firmware tweaking, but the results are consistently good/better and ongoing support is great.
Gaming phone confuses me. I guess I'm not the target demographic.

Honestly... yeah? (I didn't watch the video just basing this on the title lmao).

A few years back my parked car got bumped into by a subcontractor at work. Got it all on dashcam. Sent the clip to the police and my insurance. As far as I know, my insurance did what it would've done regardless of if I had the clip (reimbursed the repair). I reported it at the time to work's (large tech company in California) office facility people and company security and also submitted a police report with the clip. As far as I know the cops never did anything, and for the several months I was still working there the same guy was never fired from the subcontractor, subcontractor never seemed to get in trouble, and the amount of dents on his truck continued to pile up. And he never acknowledged me when I walked or drove by him.

So the dashcam was basically meaningless the one time it would've been useful for some kind of repercussions.

Anyway that's my rant about it.

I guess I should contribute a useful comment too.

Last month I bought an LG C2 OLED TV after using a very cheap and basic 1080p LCD tv for the past ~5 years.

Huge upgrade, still getting used to it. Games look fantastic on it, especially Gran Turismo 7 on my PS5. I watched Top Gun: Maverick on it last weekend and that was phenomenal as well. Same with Ford vs Ferrari a couple weeks back.

It was a pricey upgrade and I admittedly never thought I'd go for a TV so close to the upper-end of the range, but it's quite nice. And I watch TV quite a bit, especially once baseball season starts.
