Looks like we’re getting some improvements to CarPlay and Bluetooth performance today!

If my wife's three Subaru's are any indication you best get used to checking for updates. I have never seen any other manufacturer that needs to update the infotainment system like they do.

Are these updates OTA? Or we need to connect the head unit to WIFI? I am reading that we have the option to disable fake engine sound with this update.

The email says the update is done via WiFi, yes.

Where did you hear the bit about the engine sound option? The email does not mention that.

Here's the full email:

On Wednesday, October 12 a software update for the Subaru STARLINK in-vehicle touchscreen in your Ice Silver Metallic 2022 BRZ with VIN will be available. This update is at no cost to you. To complete this update, you will need a strong Wi-Fi signal.

You can use one of two Wi-Fi sources:

Your home Wi-Fi (if it reaches your parked location)
Your phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot (if your phone and data plan are capable)

Updating your STARLINK software will enhance the functionality of your system and improve your driving experience. This includes:

Improved performance of the in-vehicle touchscreen display
Improvements to Bluetooth connectivity
Improvements to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality

Once the update is available on October 12:

Connect to a strong Wi-Fi signal and follow the prompts on your in-vehicle touchscreen display. The entire process will take up to 1 hour and 10 minutes. During this time, the standard in-vehicle touchscreen display features will be unavailable

On my WIFI at home it took less than 5 minutes to download. It was done installing in less than 20 minutes, but it failed to install somehow. I was driving though. I went out and checked on my break, and the install definitely failed.

Will try again at home. I plan to just slap a battery tender on and leave it in the on position.

Installation is taking a long time 30 minutes and counting. The download took about 10 minutes tethered to my phone.

Ok, so I finally finished it. I kept the engine running the entire time for this.

1- Once you're connected to wifi (I used my phone tethered to the car) and you have the car to automatically check for updates- the update will pop up right away.

2- Click Download Now and you'll get this window showing the progress of the download. For me it took about 10 minutes to download.

3- Once downloaded, you can now install it. This takes a long time. On my first try, it went for about 15 minutes and then the screen went black as if the system was rebooting (normal for computer updates) but after waiting 5 minutes... the screen never came back on.

So I held the power button on the head unit to re-start it. It re-started and I went back to the settings menu where the update was and I clicked Install to re-start the install. It went back to the screen with the slowly crawling status bar. I lost track of time during the install because I got so bored I went for a drive during it. If I had to guess, I'd say just the installation took about 30 minutes. Once the install is complete- you get this screen-

I clicked next, parked, locked the car and went inside for a drink. I came back 20 minutes later to this:

Success.

Nothing on the surface has changed. There is no option to toggle the fake engine sound (I double checked every setting menu). I never had any issues with the screen/bluetooth/android auto in the past so I can't comment on whether or not it works better post-update. It feels the same.

Really hoping to see an update to the GR86 software soon as well-- Apple CarPlay constantly crashes on me and my maps apps (I've tried both Google and Waze) are not happy and often cannot locate me properly or even load.

ruturaj001 10-12-2022 07:00 PM

Lol, this is crazy, I am on 120-580

Seems like 121-870 is from new update

Other thread has this one 122-080 as supposed to be version number from update

jvincent 10-12-2022 07:19 PM

I just installed 121-870 and my winter tires today.

The two operations took about the same time, so that was good.

dragoontwo 10-12-2022 07:24 PM

wonder why some got 121-770(me) and others 121-870.

Maybe updates have to be done in order. Have you tried again to see if there is another update available?
