Subaru Orange Coast

I did Mention it earlier but I’ll say again… it seemed to have been an isolated issue with the tech working on my car. I still plan to take my car there for future services. They did offer to make it right with zero questions asked and tons of apologies from the service department

So I checked my car this morning expecting nothing and got a prompt to update to F41CMM121-770 which isn't even listed in the PDF.

My theory:
- According to the PDF shared here earlier, they wanted dealers to install the 122-080 update because the OTA was too big and was causing high failure rates
- They realized that relying on dealers is a waste of time (and thus money!)
- They figured out a way to make an intermediate update (121-770) that's small enough to succeed OTA, and focuses on improving the reliability of future OTA updates
- There will be a follow-up update to 121-770 soon

Maybe. it would seem that people on 101-880 are receiving 121-880, likely people getting 121-770 are coming from 091-781.

Or I could be completely wrong. Who knows.

I got an e-mail from Subaru yesterday (12 Oct) stating there was an update for my head unit available for download starting on 12 Oct. I haven't checked version numbers or attempted the download, so I don't know if it matches what you listed above, or whether it's another update.

What bothered me about the e-mail was it stated the process would take an hour. If I remember correctly I have to have the engine running in order for the car to connect and download/update software. That means I'll have to leave my car in the garage (in range of my wifi) with the engine running. With a northern exposure and prevailing winds all of the exhaust from the car will be blown back into the house rather than escaping out the open door....

You can do it with the car in the on position with the engine off and a battery charger hooked up. If you're on wifi with a good connection it will likely take 30-45 mins.

I was really bummed out that I would have to go to the dealership, so this is awesome news!

Seems like we also need to get update assigned on Subaru side. Those who got the email are seeing update. I haven't got any email yet and I don't see any update. I am on 120-580.

Do you think it was VIN based? I think it's interesting that all owners didn't get the e-mail.

I ran the update yesterday. The whole process, start to finish to include download, took about 40 minutes and brought me up to version 121-770. I didn't even think to look at the version number prior to running the update. As far as I know, my car has not been updated since I drove it home in late January.

I have checked multiple times and I got no updates available every time including last night. So I assume it's VIN based. I think whatever system they have for emailing doesn't have email id associated with every VIN.

It might be dependent on current version as well. Assuming update is patch that applies over existing system opposed to in Kia where we get whole system. What was download size approximately?

H380 10-17-2022 08:12 PM

I was told the email notice is a slow roll out by state and region. So the update servers are not swamped all at once.

I don't recall seeing anything indicating file size. Just a notice an update was ready and some instructions. The status indicator once downloading was just a ribbon showing progress, no percentage or amount of data received.

It would be really hard to judge based on observations. I have pretty fast internet in the house and decent coverage in my garage. No telling the speeds of the servers or the cloud provider where Subaru hosts the data. Even that might vary depending on where their network load balancers send you when you kick off the download.

That makes sense. I think that is how a lot of OS updates work on mobile phones too.
