Track Comparison: S2000 CR vs. Gen 2 BRZ

Track comparison, S2000 CR vs. gen 2 BRZ. I like that both cars had good drivers, were on the same tires, and had typical enthusiast-level track mods.

I love my Gen2 BRZ (loved my gen1 as well) but the BRZ does not match the S2000 in terms of driver engagement. The revs, the sound, the connectivity, the open top experience….all just amounts to a more exhilarating experience. For daily, twins all day everyday. For a weekend warrior, AP1/2 takes the cake. YMMV though.

You're preaching to the choir in some ways. I've had the pleasure of driving an AP2 pretty often, including driving and instructing in one at the track. (I've also been a passenger in an AP1 spinning at hogpen at VIR, for whatever that's worth lol). It's not really feasible or advisable for a new, modern coupe to match the raw feel of a 20 year old convertible, but it's not really what the video was about. The video just shows that a similar/better prepped CR is slightly slower than a 2nd gen BRZ around Chuckwalla. I found it entertaining and somewhat surprising, figured others might enjoy.

That BRZ is more prepped than the CR!

Hmm what makes you say that? From what I can see they had similar mod lists -- basically coilovers, NT01's, stock power.

The CR adds a Spoon 1.75 way LSD with 4.44 FD, Endless Mono4 BBK, and Recaros. BRZ is still on the stock 4.1 torsen, stock brakes, and stock seats.

CR seems more prepped to me?

Edit: Appears the BRZ has a rlca.

Because I'm familiar with both cars personally. The BRZ has a full SPL catalog that isn't disclosed, for example.

Ooh that's interesting, so F/R LCAs, toe arms, end links and a subframe bushing kit? What else does it have? They should really give an accurate mod list for the video.

While I enjoyed the video, I was really hoping for more of a stock-for-stock comparison. You can skew the results in either direction, as they hinted with the S2K still trying to dial in the recently-installed suspension setup.

When I finally get my GR86, I'll have to write up an owners perspective of what I'd consider critical comparisons (for example, my AP1 shifter felt like a bolt-action rifle). Engine sound within the cabin is another major topic, even with an aftermarket cat-back, the S2K with the top up was pretty difficult to hear the exhaust, almost muted or dulled at times (but absolute RACECAR with the top down :wub::wub:).

Even though these two examples were unchanged in the power department, they seemed pretty evenly matched, but even that is subjective (who corners better on which alignment/spring setup, etc etc).

My takeaway, it seems like the two cars are comparably equal in the fun department, so to me that's all that matters.

Try running an open filter on the s2k :)

If you’re looking for laptimes for pure factory stock cars, the CR did a 3:15.0 at C&D’s lightning lap and the gr86/brz did roughly a 3:12 flat. I liked this comparison better though because few people actually track their cars bone stock so it makes sense to throw on some light track mods (tires, alignment, coilovers, pads).

Mine was procharged, I was already ahead in hp gains, a conservative ~290 whp. Also had a larger throttle body :)

That... wasn't at all what I was getting at, but rather, increasing induction noise for more aural pleasure.

I'm so immature.

I knew what you were getting at though, it had an open filter already.
