Oil Residue Buildup
 

I'm trying to figure out what could have caused this oil buildup on the drivers side of the engine. It clearly went unaddressed for quite some time and maybe never was addressed.

I've owned the car for over a year and in that time I have driven it 40 miles and that was just to pick it up where it came to rest in my garage ever since. So I know nothing of it's past history or tendencies. Priorities obligated me to neglect my progress on the vehicle which has since picked back up and while removing the intake box ducting I started to realize just how much residue they're actually was in there.

On the back side of the block above the freeze plug is like the line of demarcation where it just becomes clean. In that same area there's a plug towards the top that looks like it may have been replaced.

I'm open to suggestions. I plan on giving it a deep clean and getting all that off so anything that is still ongoing I should be able to track and pinpoint. But I'm just astonished at the severity of it.

Very common. Could be valve cover, timing cover, AVCS solenoids, runoff from missing filler, runoff from oil filter. It also tends to get flung around by the belt. Degrease and try to identify the leak.

Better not enough silicone sealant than too much that clogs the oil passages i guess?

Get some purple power and go to town.. after it's all cleaned and still can't figure it out, they sell UV dye you can pour into the crankcase and you can use a UV light to see where it leaks from after driving it.

I will notice a film of oil below the filler neck if I don't tighten to cap a 1/8 extra turn or roughly 1/32 uggadugga.

These are all good points. I guess my next step is to get it cleaned up and start spotting out leaks. I will have the added complexity of an E-Force SC added to the situation to further muddy the waters.

That is an excellent kit, just make sure it has the upgraded bypass valve before you install it.

I did just that I purchased it last year and it was the updated version. There's a part of me that sort of wishes I would have just went with the K swap based on my power goals, but we will see if this satiates my hunger.

A little late to the party as I don't check the forums as often but I have the same issue. From my research, it's a Subaru thing.

I believe it's the timing chain cover as it's a common oil leak problem. The heat cycles of the engine wear the seal down.

Well it didn't get any better under the intake manifold. The wiring harness is coated.

Hope when you clean it doesn't arise problems

i would tape off the intake ports, not just jam a rag/towel in them. too easy for stuff to fall in there yet!
