The consequences of having a forum that still runs on vbulletin lol. message board platforms from at least the previous decade have the common sense to put long quoted posts in an expandable box.

why did Subaru/Toyota adopt this? Those stupid turn signals are one of the worst features in a modern BMW.

I think alot of manufacturers adopted this for some reason.

One of those "if it aint broke...dont fix it" situations where BMW decided whatever worked just didnt work enough.....

My guess is a manufacturer, that BMW owns a good share of, made a bunch of a "new design" turn stalk. No one wanted them, so instead of taking a loss, BMW said, "none of our customers use the turn signal stalk, so we can put them in our cars and no one will notice."

This checks out.

EDIT: and as part of the deal for the Supra engines, BMW talked Toyota into buying an absolute crapload of them citing "minimum purchase quantities".

As Lexus owner, I can tell you these turn signals have been in use for more than a decade... I doubt it's bimmer thing. I like 'em, just like I cannot do without that cruise control stalk. Rented a Rav4 that did not have the cruise control stalk and I almost turned it in early!

Tat instant response cruise stalk is the best thing ever put in a car! It is in exactly the right spot to be operated wit the flick of a finger, requires zero looking down and gives real time action. I struggle with top of the wheel mounted one every single time now.

Ahh yes, the Pinnacle of Toyota KISS engineering.

That and the digital clocks.

For anyone who is interested in this swap, but intimidated by the idea of repinning a connector, I’ve started producing plug and play harnesses. Selling these for $40 + shipping. I have 1 left from the initial run, and supplies coming to make 15 more. PM me if interested.

Any possibility of making a harness for the 2022 WRX to 2020 BRZ/86 or this harness working for me? :)

More detailed response in DMs, but for anyone else wondering - putting the BMW style turn signals into a 1st gen is just short of impossible.
