New BRZ owner questions....
 

I am a lucky owner of a 2022 BRZ which i picked up today. I came from a 2017 model. I have a few questions regarding the new car that i noticed on my 120 miles drive home.

1. I always complained about the throttle mapping on my 2017. 20% throttle input (as in pushing the gas pedal 20% = 80% throttle opening. In other words, the throttle pedal is very sensitive for the first portion of the travel. On the contrary, i have noticed the opposite for the gen2 car. When i push 20% of the throttle, the car feels like it only have 10% throttle, response seems lacking. I have not done a WOT yet since the car only has 120 miles on it so i don't know what the remaining 80% pedal will feel like but is this normal?

2. I found the idle to be rough/lumpy. I can see the tach/rev going up and down maybe +/- 50 revs (@ about 700rpm)? I mean it's not like it's stalling or surging.....just a rougher idle than my 2017. Is the ECU learning? Will this go away?

3. I noticed the gas consumption is noticeably worse when compared to my 2017. Will it improve once the engine loosens up?

1 - Yeah, the throttle is pretty mushy in the 22, specifically at lower speeds/rpm. It can be a bit unpredictable, specifically when rev matching, until you get used to it. Once you're up over 4k, it feels much more responsive and fine which I imagine is the reason why they tuned it this way.

2 - It's not the smoothest idle but I certainly wouldn't complain about it. It's more steady than my previous car (16 focus st).

3 - I've settled into 25/26 mpg in mostly suburban driving (almost no highway). Adding in a little highway driving to the mix, it will get up to 27/28 pretty easily. I can't complain. I calculate every tank myself and find the car's estimate about 1-1.5 mpg optimistic.

My idle is buttery smooth and consistent.

With the larger displacement, I wouldn't expect an increase in fuel mileage

Re. the throttle response, I just got my 22 BRZ this week and noticed the exact same thing. Don’t have any suggestions other than I’ve also heard the throttle is much sharper above 4000 rpm which I won’t be able to try until break in is over. I wonder if a LWFW and tune would help.

On the plus side, that dead spot in the first 5 percent of throttle on the 1st gens seems to be gone.

Agreed on throttle response and rev-hang below 4000rpm, makes driving sedately somewhat more difficult. Not a huge problem, but can be frustrating when you are wanting to get from A to B and not look like it's your first manual car.

Over 4000rpm is perfect in my opinion, where this car truly shines!

Thank you for everyone's response. It's comforting to know that the dull throttle response is normal and that i didn't get a defective car! :) But yes, it can be frustrating at time when you are driving at low speeds.

I will keep monitoring the idle situation and go from there. I "think" it's starting to smooth itself out so i am hoping it will get better with time.

As for the gas mileage, i have started to track it in town and the car indicated 8.7L/100km (27mpg) and that is mostly in the city so it's inline with what others are getting.

Below 4k to drive sedately, you have to drive it really sedately… like make your shift time a second slower than usual.

the throttle on both my gr86 and my friends 2022 BRZ became amazing after 1200km. Was terrible before that. It is normal.

Thanks for posting that! That made me think maybe the throttle hadn't been calibrated yet so I tried the 1st gen quick throttle calibration method and it worked! The throttle response under 4k is really good now. No problems rev-matching on downshifts. Just feels normal and easy to drive now.

@Petah78 With your engine off, put your car in ignition mode (don't start your engine), go full throttle 20x, turn your car off. Do that once more. Then turn your engine on. That'll calibrate the throttle pedal.

Thats pretty damn good.
Mine is 10.5 after driving it all of the winter.

Keep in mind that winter is horrible on gas and my 8.7 is really only driving around town with no "fun" times yet. In addition, take the car's on board computer with a grain of salt as some can be "optimistic". This was certainly the case with my gen1 car. I will report back once i get a better sense of the actual mileage.

I haven't reset the counter since the first week I had the car in Jan and my longterm average is 8.8l/100km.

I'm mostly city driving with a few trips to Montreal.

I live in a small town, drive short distances. Thats pretty bad for the milage especially in the winter.
Once I start taking more highway trips this summer hopefully it will improve.
