Seatbelt repairs
 

Hello! Long story short I found some of the red TRD edition 86 seatbelts that are on eBay. They have been in a accident and both driver side and passenger side are locked. From what I am reading, it seems like the tensioners will need to be replaced as well as possibly the airbag module? Also, is there any shops that would be best to send them to to get fixed? I want to make sure I do it right as I value safety, but I’m not planning on spending $800 for the seatbelts brand new. Thanks!

Not sure if you purchased yet but you can get new Subaru OEM belts for about $480/pr.

Don't do it. The webbing will also be stretched. People do not realize that once in an accident the webbing on the seatbelt stretches to catch you and reduce the force your body sees against the belts. If you were to reuse these after getting the retractors unlocked, you could suffer further injuries if they are ever needed in an accident again. This same thing is true with racing harnesses as well.

One more note on safety equipment like Nomex balaclavas and racing suits, they are not supposed to be washed in your home washing machine. The repeated soaking in soap will cause a build-up of the dry soap particles, most of which are flammable, and reduce the materials resistance to catching fire.

Makes sense! I will have to see what the circumstances of the crash were.

I was only going to wash them by hand with soap that is ok for seatbelts (as the other guy said). They wouldn’t have turned out perfect, but would have been a good look in the interior.

Last thing for you: let’s say the car was sitting when it got hit, would the belts be locked up like this pair are? Would that stretch the belt out? What about a very low speed incident? As mentioned, I really like the look, but if it compromised safety I would have to pass on them. Thanks!

Seatbelts are one time use. Pass.

I’m not spending a grand on seatbelts when mine are working perfectly fine! The whole point was to get an exclusive part that would make the interior look better without spending too much. You can get these from Toyota (the actual TRD red ones) for about $250 a piece (originally $350 but dealerships offer them for less). The part numbers are SU003-07840 and SU003-07841.

Who said anything about $1,000? You originally said they were $800 and I am pointing out they are significantly less. I assume you are looking at the ones on eBay for $150 and by the time you get them unlocked you are talking about $370. For a little more you can get brand new ones. Do with the information what you want... just stay safe.

I was reading your comment as $480 pr not pair haha. All in all they would be about $75 to repair from what I’ve seen and I’d get the pair for $100 (he’s trying to get rid of them and I’m getting a few more pieces from him), so let’s just say $300 all in all. But yes, safety is the priority so if these truly wouldn’t be safe in the end I’ll just forget about them for now.
